Symbian Ltd Overview
Powering the heart of the wireless community - Symbian is a software licensing company that develops and supplies the advanced, open, standard operating system – Symbian OS – for data-enabled mobile phones.
Symbian was established as a private independent company in June 1998.
Headquartered in the UK, it now has more than 1000 staff with offices in Japan, Sweden, UK, USA and India.
As at June 2005 54 phones that use Symbian OS from seven manufacturers are shipping worldwide and a further 50 phones from eleven manufacturers were in development.
During the first half of 2005, 14.5 million phones using Symbian OS shipped worldwide, bringing the worldwide installed base to more than 39 million phones.
At the heart of the smartphone market Symbian is an independent, for-profit company whose mission is to establish Symbian OS as the world standard for mobile digital data systems, primarily for use in cellular telecoms.
