HardwareHeaven and KitGuru have reviewed the new SteelSeries 7H and 7H USB gaming headsets.

Here's what they had to say:

  • HardwareHeaven:

"In terms of performance the 7H were fantastic. Looking first to the gaming tests, whether it is in stereo mode or virtual 7.1 we were hugely impressed with the clarity and power offered by the 7H. Ambient sounds, music, voices, major effects... all were recreated exceptionally well. In fact the 7H offered us as good a gaming experience as we have had from a headset. Gaming isn’t this products only strong point though as the experience when listening to music was also very good. Across the entire audio range the SteelSeries 7H provided us with a great representation of our various materials. They excel in clarity as well as bass and it is very rare that we find a scenario where they fail to match the market leading PC 360 in music related scenarios... of course we need to keep in mind that the Sennheiser headset costs over twice as much as the 7H."

  • KitGuru:

"During our movie and audio playback tests the 7H performed well, despite being slightly limited in volume. The only omission is surround sound which would make both movie and gaming performance much better.

The 7H is available for around £75 inc vat. This is a reasonably high price considering the lack of surround sound so we feel the USB version, costing around £92 is a better option if you can afford the £17 premium."

The general consensus is that the 7H USB version is indeed better than the standard 7H version, if only due to the fact that it provides 7.1 virtual surround for only $20 extra.
