Bona Fide Reviews, OCIA, and Techgage have posted reviews of the new Thermaltake BlacX 5G USB 3.0 hard drive docking station.

Here's what they had to say:

  • Bona Fide Reviews:

"I like hard drive docks, they’re just so useful and versatile, much more so than a standard hard drive enclosure is.

The new BlacX 5g from Thermaltake is well made, offers decent speeds and it looks good as well. I’ve got several docks here myself, including another USB 2.0 BlacX dock and I must say I like the looks of this new one a lot better."

  • OCIA:

"In light of the poor USB 3.0 performance, it would be nice if the BlacX 5G also had an eSATA interface, which would allow those with high speed SSDs to be able to utilize the full bandwidth capability of their drives. On a positive note, the BlacX 5G retails for the same $60 as the original BlacX did, so at least you're not laying out any more cash than what you would for USB 2.0 support. And you will see better performance than you would with the USB 2.0 unit. But if you want to use the BlacX with a SATA 6.0Gb/s drive or a fast SSD you'd do better to look elsewhere."

  • Techgage:

"I'm not one to get that excited over a hard drive dock, but the BlacX did impress me enough to convince me that it's the dock I'll be using from now on. I'm not a HDD dock/enclosure expert, but I've used many of them over the years, and none have given me the same sort of reliability and confidence as this one.

At its current price of ~$45, the BlacX 5G is priced a bit higher than other docks and enclosures, but this is one of the rarer cases where I'd say that small premium is worth it. The BlacX 5G looks good, works well, and stands to retain those qualities for quite some time. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a top-rate external storage solution."

If you're in the market for a USB 3.0 hard drive dock, the BlacX 5G seems like a solid option. Having said that, in all the reviews that I have read, I have never seen this unit achieve transfer rates above ~185MB/s.
