Funky Kit and KitGuru have reviewed the high performance Intel SSD 510 Series 250GB SATA 6Gb/s solid state drive. This new model features a Marvell controller, 34nm Intel NAND, but mostly importantly 500MB/s read and 315MB/s write speeds.

Let's see what they had to say:

  • Funky Kit:

"There's only one word to describe the performance of the Intel SSD 510 series ... astonishing. For a 2.5-inch unit, it's one of the fastest SSD we've tested in our labs. This is all thanks to the faster SATA3 interface and the Marvell SSD controller, which seems to be doing its job. But bear in mind you'll need a motherboard that feature these SATA3 ports in order to take full advantage of the Intel SSD 510. If you've only got SATA2 ports, then not to worry. You can still run the Intel SSD 510 on the SATA2 interface, but obviously you'll get slower speeds."

  • KitGuru:

"There have been many people waiting on the new Intel 510 series solid state drives and we can’t help but feel slightly disappointed with the overall package.

The 120GB unit is a sequential read powerhouse, capable of handling well in excess of 400 MB/s with a 6Gbps controller. In our testing it performed better than the competing products when used as a boot drive, or when loading games and applications. Unfortunately by using the Marvell controller, the write performance is a little lacking, and much slower than current class leading Sandforce drives. This is only the tip of the iceberg however, as there are new SF-2000 drives about to hit the market, which promise superior all round performance."

This is obviously a very impressive SSD, however it doesn't surpass the equally new OCZ Vertex 3. Frankly, I am very surprissed that this new SSD doesn't a feature an Intel designed controller, since they had proven to be exceptionally robust and quick when it comes to the all-important random 4K write speeds.
