Benchmark Reviews, Hardware Canucks, HardwareHeaven, Legit Reviews, PC Perspective, and PureOverclock have posted reviews of the brand new AMD 990FX/SB950 motherboards from ASUS and MSI.

Let's see what they had to say:

  • Benchmark Reviews: ASUS Crosshair V Formula 990FX Motherboard Review:

"The ASUS Crosshair V Formula 990FX motherboard is set for an MSRP of $239. That's really not bad at all for the amount of features found on the board. Seven SATA 6Gb/s ports, six USB 3.0 ports, and ASUS even went higher than normal on the audio and LAN, choosing the Intel GbE and SupremeFX X-Fi 2. The $239 price tag puts you lower than many enthusiast boards, but a little high for a mainstream offering. However, with all the features the Crosshair V Formula motherboard offers, I think it certainly sits above mainstream."

  • Hardware Canucks: ASUS Sabertooth 990FX AM3+ Motherboard Review:

"Because the Sabertooth 990FX is so good though, and quite reasonably priced considering all the functionality that has baked in, we can overlook the aforementioned issues. We can even turn a blind eye to the fact that the new 990FX chipset is nothing revolutionary. The build quality, performance, features, and 5 year warranty speak for themselves, but right now there is relatively little incentive to buy a 990FX-based motherboard until the AM3+ Bulldozer processors are released."

  • HardwareHeaven: ASUS RoG Crosshair V Formula (990FX) and MSI 990FXA-GD80 - AMD 990FX Launch Review:

"The ASUS Crosshair V Formula offers users a great entry into the high end of AMDs 990FX product range; it provides excellent features and performance.

MSI's hardware impresses on the 990FXA-GD80 however the BIOS doesn't quite feel ready for primetime, we have no doubt this will be resolved soon though."

  • Legit Reviews: MSI 990FXA-GD80 Motherboard Review:

"The MSI 890FXA-GD70 is the previous flagship motherboard for MSI and it has an MSRP of $199, but can be found today for for $174 after rebates. The MSI 990FX and 890FX boards might have the same MSRP, but the choice between the two is crystal clear in terms of future CPU support. If you don't care about upcoming AM3+ processors then the 890FX will offer the same performance as an 990FX and will offer the best bang for your buck due to rebates. Our suggestion is to go with the AMD 990FX chipset in order to have a platform that supports octo-core CPUs!"

  • PC Perspective: AMD 990FX/SB950 Release: Asus SABERTOOTH 990FX and the MSI 990FXA-GD80þ:

"As far as I was concerned, the Asus board is the show stealer here. It was consistent in terms of performance, it had a much more aggressive auto overclock, and its overall overclocking prowess is simply outstanding. The UEFI BIOS is very clean, informative, and easy to use. I had no issues with any board level components, and the ASMedia USB 3.0 controller was slightly faster than the rest. The board design and layout is very good, and I had no problems with DIMM clearance with the larger fan and heatsink I used during testing. DIMM slots were closer to the CPU socket than many would like, but it should not affect the majority of customers out there."

  • PureOverclock: ASUS Crosshair V Formula 990FX:

"The ASUS Crosshair V Formula is certainly a premium motherboard, bringing the new AMD 990FX chipset to market in impressive fashion, and enthusiasts will definitely look to a board like this. ASUS has really focused their Republic of Gamers products toward those consumers who want big features and top performance, and don't mind the price tag that accompanies it. The Crosshair V Formula brings an abundance of features, ease of use, stability, overclockability, innovation, and quality to market, proving this motherboard is for those who want the very best. It's also one of the best looking AMD boards we've seen to date, proving that substance doesn't need to be compromised by style."

These all seem like great motherboards, but until AM3+ Bulldozer/Zambezi processors are released there is very little reason to buy a 990FX motherboard unless you are desperate for SLI.
