Rbmods and Real World Labs have posted a review of the ROCCAT Kulo 7.1 USB, a surround sound gaming headset.

Here's an excerpt:

  • Rbmods:

"The thing about Kulo or any other USB driven headset in this matter is that it doesn’t matter what soundcard you have or you don’t have. It uses USB 2.0 connection and not a soundcard output, you can actually benefit from the audio chipset that comes with the headset, however if you have got some decent card then better get yourself a pair of good analogue headphones for 2.0 stereo.

The 7.1 USB sound card comes really in handy even with notebooks that only offer mediocre sound quality. Virtual surround sound speaker in headset can’t produce very clear sounds all at once compared to true surround sound with dedicated speakers which play explosions, shooting and speech clearly. Even with the speakers at the ear there is clear difference between sound in front of your ear and sound back of you that ear can’t hear."

  • Real World Labs:

"Of course there are better surround headsets out there such as the G930 by Logitech or the Psyko offering, something which applies on everything else in this world especially if you have no limit on how much you can spend. However if you are not amongst the people who would spend over 80Euros for an surround headset then the Roccat KULO 7.1 USB virtual surround headset is an excellent choice not only because of its small size, low weight, comfort and design but also because of its audio quality, that is why we are happy to award it with our Editors Real Deal Choice Award."

While this is a good surround sound headset for the money, it is damn near impossible to find in North America, and it doesn't seem like availability in the rest of the world is particularly good either.
