Legit Reviews and PC Perspective have reviewed the brand new Western Digital VelociRaptor 1TB hard drive, which features a 10,000RPM rotational speed, large 64MB cache, read/write speeds of 200MB/s, 1.4 million hours MTBF, five year warranty, and $319 MSRP.

Let's see what they had to say:

  • Legit Reviews:

"Users can expect a 25% increase (according to WD) in performance and we saw sequential read/write scores that exceeded the rated specifications of 200MB/s. This is supported by a large 64MB cache to help buffer data. Overall, for a spinning platter drive, performance was very good and it's a bit amazing that they've been able to get so much capacity in a drive with the platters rotating at 10,000 RPM. With such speeds, you'd expect the drive to be noisy but even on our open test bed, the noise was better than our aging 300GB model and is listed at 30 dBA idle and 37 dBA in performance seek mode. At no time did the drive ever feel overly hot to the touch so the attached heat sink does a nice job of siphoning off any heat being generated by the drive."

  • PC Perspective:

"Western Digital has done well to keep the VelociRaptor pedigree alive with this new 1TB model. We saw notable imporvements across the board, as well as some very impressive throughput figures breaking the 200MB/sec mark. While spinning disks have a ways to go before they can compete with solid state, the new VelociRaptor does extremely well and tops all other spinning disks out there, at a cost/GB way cheaper than any SSD!"

Although pricey this is clearly the fastest consumer hard drive on the market. While it won't match the performance of most budget SSDs, it does offer a very attractive mix of performance and storage space.
