Storm Skorpion Mouse Bungee Review

May 17, 2013 - Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan

PureOC have reviewed the reasonably priced Storm Skorpion Mouse Bungee, a simple solution to sticky mouse cords.

Let's see what they had to say:

"The Skorpion bungee does a great job at keeping the mouse cord from hanging up on the edge of my desk. The bungee is heavy enough that it doesn’t slide around on you and the rubbery feet help keep it planted. The design of the Skorpion is very unique as well. CM Storm decided to give it an edgy gamer styling and it looks great.

The CM Storm Skorpion can be found over at Amazon.com for just $17.00 with free shipping and carries a 2-year warranty. For that price it’s a no-brainer to solve your cord-catching problems and for this particular niche product we give it our Pure Overclock’s Editor’s Choice Award."

While not everyone likes to use mouse cord controller 'solutions' the CM Storm Skorpion appears to be one of hte better ones.  Check it out!

Fractal Design Tesla R2 1000W Power Supply Review

May 17, 2013 - Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan

Kit Guru have reviewed the reasonably priced Fractal Design Tesla R2 1000W power supply, which features a reasonably asking price and 80PLUS Gold certification.

Let's see what they had to say:

"If you need a very high output power supply and are shopping with a limited budget, then the Fractal Design Tesla R2 1000W is a decent buy. At only £130 inc vat it certainly will appeal to the audience who chase high wattage figures.

The unit is well made, constructed from a high quality metal outer shell which has received silk screening for the logo presentation, rather than simple stickers. We like how they have suspended the fan with rubber screws to decouple it from the power supply case itself, reducing vibrations and lowering noise levels. Overall emissions are low and only in the last 20% of power output does the fan spin up significantly."

With its solid performance and great asking price this non-modular power supply is undoubtedly a great addition to Fractal Design's PSU lineup.  Check it out!

Asus Z87 1150 Motherboard Line-up Preview

May 17, 2013 - Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan

Kit Guru have just posted a preview of Asus's upcoming Z87 Motherboard Line-up which supports the upcoming 'Haswell' socket 1150 Intel processors.

Let's see what they had to say:

"Judging by the information that we gathered from Asus’ Z87 press conference, it is clear that the company is taking the motherboard market very seriously with its 8 series chipset products, and is aiming to cater for every market.

According to Asus marketing maestro, Miodrag Relic, Z87 could represent the company’s largest motherboard line-up with the possible number of unique models in the region of thirty.

Even with the bold colour change for its main line-up of boards, unique fan header design, new and improved wireless connectivity, interesting ROG features, and updated TUF components, by far the biggest news for Asus’ Z87 launch is the introduction of two brand new models."

While all of these models are exciting the new Deluxe, ROG and Sabertooth are real standouts.  Check it out!

MSI Radeon HD 7790 Turbo OC 1GB Video Card Review

May 17, 2013 - Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan

Guru3D have posted a review of the enthusiast-oriented MSI Radeon HD 7790 Turbo OC 1GB graphics card, which features a custom cooler and overclocked specifications.

Let's see what they had to say:

"The Radeon HD 7790 1GB as tested today works out well, the cooling performance is nice, the noise level's very low, we had a 3rd party cooled SKU at hand and that thus says nothing about reference measurements. Overall we can certainly recommend the Radeon HD 7790 based products if that is what your budget allows you to purchase. We are now slowly entering the phase where entry level cards reach Full HD resolutions. I need to add this little note alright; AMD's Never Settle Reloaded promotion continues. At participating retailers beginning 02 April, 2013, gamers will be able to receive a free copy of BioShock Infinite with a purchase of their new AMD Radeon HD 7790 graphics card.

MSI has a terrific offering with their OC card. Totally silent and it keeps the GPU very cool. These cards are great for entry level to mainstream gaming and tagged with an interesting price."

With its custom heatsink and factory overclocking, the Turbo OC is easily worth the price premium over stock models.  Check it out!

Logitec G700s Wireless Gaming Mouse Review

May 17, 2013 - Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan

Hardware Heaven have posted a review of the Logitech's latest gaming orientated G700s wireless mouse which features 8200DPI sensor and 13 programmable buttons.

Let's see what they had to say:

"For those who are familiar with the G700 the G700s will at first glance seem very similar and that is no bad thing. The original model was a lovely mouse which felt great in the hand however there were a few little niggles which stopped it from scoring as high as it could. The surface was one but the "s" fixes that and the new coatings used on this version of the mouse are much improved.

So that brings us to value where the G700s is priced to compete with other mid-high end gaming mice and given the quality and features (including the wired/wireless hybrid design) plus 3-year warranty we feel that Logitech have this aspect pretty much spot on.

An evolution of the G700, Logitech's G700s takes an already impressive mouse and improves it in a number of key areas. Without doubt our favourite gaming mouse at this time."

High asking price or not the G700s is an excellent MMO centric mouse.  However, with so many already excellent choices to choose from you will have to do your homework before choosing any new mouse.

MSI Z77A-GD65 Gaming Edition Motherboard Review

May 17, 2013 - Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan

PureOC have reviewed the all new MSI Z77A-GD65 Gaming Edition Motherboard,  which has many value added features such as onboard Killer E2200 NIC and Sound Blaster Cinema software.

Let's see what they had to say:

"To wrap things up, the MSI Z77A-GD65 Gaming motherboard has a color scheme which is a huge improvement to its aesthetic appeal. The red and black really contrast nicely. The dragon logo on the S/B heatsink was a nice touch and gives it a unique look. We appreciated this change from MSI and hope we continue to see this going forward.

When it comes to its software package, we think that MSI went above and beyond. The intensive software package that was available with the motherboard really made it stand out from the rest. While we won’t see all users taking advantage of everything included, we did like that it was without the additional high ticket price tag. This was especially appreciated since this board offered quite a bit of unique features such as the Killer E2200 NIC and the Sound Blaster Cinema software to enhance your experience while gaming or media playing."

This looks like a feature packed motherboard at a great price, check it out!

EVGA GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST SC 2GB Graphics Card Review

May 17, 2013 - Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan

Tweak Town have reviewed the mainstream EVGA GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST SC 2GB, which features a custom cooler and overclocked specializations.

Let's see what they had to say:

"At the time of writing the EVGA GTX 650 Ti Boost 2GB SuperClocked can be had for $169.99 after a $10 rebate. This puts it in the middle of the pack when compared to other GTX 650 Ti Boost 2GB offerings. The difference between what we're seeing from EVGA, though, and all the other cards, is the fact that this one carries with it the highest out of the box overclock.

If you're not interested in overclocking yourself, the EVGA GTX 650 Ti Boost 2GB SuperClocked indeed stands out as it gives you performance that's clearly faster than the competition. What's also appealing is the fact that there's no massive price premium or anything like that associated with the model."

Thanks to is very good factory overclock, this is another fine addition to NVIDIA's mid-range lineup and is easily worth the price premium over stock models.  Check it out!

OCZ Vertex 3.20 120GB Solid State Drive Review

May 17, 2013 - Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan

Benchmark Reviews have reviewed the OCZ Vertex 3.20 120GB, a SATA 6Gb/s solid state drive based on the SandForce SF-2281 controller and features cutting edge 20nm ONFi NAND.

Let's see what they had to say:

"Although this is only a 120GB drive, performance results still kept the OCZ Vertex 3.20 SSD near the top for file transfer speeds. For reference, OCZ specifies up to 550 MB/s read speeds and 520 MB/s writes. In our storage benchmark tests the 120GB OCZ Vertex 3.20 SSD confirmed these speeds. Our test results demonstrated that OCZ's Vertex 3.20 SSD was good for delivering 550/522 MB/s peak read and write speeds using ATTO Disk Benchmark SSD speed tests. Linear file transfers with Everest Disk Benchmark produced 462/466 MB/s, which exceeds performance of the OCZ Vector, Vertex 4, and Octane SSDs. Transfer speeds were very fast overall."

While this is an OK drive the rather mediocre 3 year warranty and small file performance keeps it from being serious competition for the OCZ Vector and it's 5 year warranty.

Seagate 600 480GB SATA 6Gb/s SSD Review

May 17, 2013 - Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan

The SSD Review have posted a review of the new Seagate 600 480GB SATA 6Gb/s SATA SSDs, which features Toshiba branded MLC-NAND and a LAMB controller.

Let's see what they had to say:

"Seagate literature speaks to the 600 SSD as being the ideal consumer upgrade SSD and it may be just that.  Is it a top performer?  Not yet, but this is the first day of it’s release and, just as we see with many other SSDs, we will see firmware updates that speak to performance.  Is there anything wrong with performance?  In our analysis, the only place the 600 fell short was in PCMark Vantage testing which has happened before where an excellent SSD just didn’t get along with PCMark Vantage.

As far as the benchmarks go, they consistently exceed specifications listed by Seagate and we see read performance of over 500MB/s and write performance just below.  IOPS performance is excellent and speaks to both read and write IOPS with both being over 70,000 IOPS consistently.  By all counts, the 600 SSD appears to be a solid first entry by Seagate."

The new Seagate 600 series SSD is a very good drive and is a great first try from Seagate.  Check it out!

Cooler Master V Series 1000 Watt Power Supply Review

May 17, 2013 - Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan

Kit Guru have posted a review of the Cooler Master V 1000 1000W power supply, which is fully modular and features 80PLUS Gold certification.

Let's see what they had to say:

"Cooler Master certainly made the right decision when they partnered up with Seasonic for their new high end power supplies. The V Series 1000W unit is an exceptionally good power supply, based around the class leading Seasonic KM3 high end design.

Technically the V Series 1000W power supply is rock solid and exhibits no weaknesses. Ripple suppression is class leading and well within the industry tolerance guidelines. Our sample peaked at just under 93 percent efficiency at 50 percent load, a fantastic result.

Cooler Master have adopted a very high grade fan inside the V Series 1000W supply which spins very slowly until the last 15% of load. It emits very low levels of noise across the load range and ensures that the components inside have adequate airflow. The fan profile has clearly been optimised for low noise levels, which will please many enthusiast users."

Where it is based on a proven Seasonic platform it comes as no surprise that the new V1000 is a very good power supply.  Check it out!
