Battlefield 2142 Dev Diary

Sat 2006-07-08 - Posted by Joe "OuTkAsT-1" Topolnisky
PC.IGN has kicked up a developer diary written by James Salt, the Lead Designer behind Digital Illusions' upcoming multiplayer shooter, Battlefield 2142. Here's a bit on how playtesting shakes down:

In these playtests, each designer is looking for specific things in their area. For example, the weapons designer is using these tests to evaluate weapon balance. As the lead designer, I use these tests to ensure we are keeping the Battlefield feeling of being able to go anywhere, do anything—when you want and how you want.
Play-testing also helps us to see if we are creating the atmosphere we outlined at the start of the project. A great deal of attention is paid to the experience of boarding a Titan, as well as to interior battles and fighting on the ground. For example, what does it feel like to see your enemy's Titan looming overhead while not having any nitro boost left in your jeep? These are the atmosphere-related moments we look for.
