NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT In SLI - Is it Worth it?

Mon 2008-04-21 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
MadShrimps and X-bit Labs have just tested the NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT in SLI configuration. Is it worth buying two GeForce 9600GT’s right now? Is SLI a worthwhile future upgrade path for single 9600 GT users? Let’s find out!

Here’s what they had to say:

  • MadShrimps: Leadtek 9600 GT SLI reviewed and compared with 9800 GTX.

“Talking about SLI, we tested two Leadtek 9600GT Extreme samples and compared the results with the 9800GTX reference board. Performance wise you can easily judge that SLI can give you quite some extra performance, up to roughly 70% increased FPS! Here and there you'll stumble upon games which have less support for NVIDIA's multi GPU-technology, there you'll have to do it with around 30% extra performance. But on the other hand, even with the 9800GTX having only one GPU and thus probable less configuration problems, the card never took the lead in average frame rate over the dual 9600GT's branded Leadtek. Yet, again, in CM DIRT for example, the GT's had to deal with the phenomena called Micro Stuttering, this does not occur when using single GPU configurations.”

  • X-bit Labs: Affordable Multi-GPU: Two GeForce 9600 GT in SLI.

“The GeForce 9600 GT SLI had higher performance than one such card in nearly all of our tests. The exceptions were BioShock where the GeForce 9800 GX2 and ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 worked well, but the GeForce 9600 GT SLI had no performance growth at all and Call of Juarez where the SLI subsystem was hamstringed by inefficient graphics memory management, the old-time problem of Nvidia’s solutions. But in most of the tests the GeForce 9600 GT SLI subsystem had the same or higher performance as such cards as ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2, Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX and GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB.

Summing it up, the GeForce 9600 GT SLI is currently a high-quality and fast graphics subsystem (at least for the games we tested it in). If Nvidia goes on optimizing its drivers for 2-way SLI, this configuration may be future-proof as well.”

The GeForce 9600 GT in SLI configuration provides impressive performance for relatively little money. However, it is clearly not for everyone. Aside from the obvious SLI-capable motherboard requirement, those who choose this route must be aware that they might encounter game compatibility issues, and might experience Micro Stuttering. Personally, while I would easily recommend it as an upgrade path, I would hesitate to recommend this configuration as the basis for a brand new system. Yes, it’s fast & cheap, but a worry-free GeForce 9800 GTX can be had for as little as $40 more, and is a better choice for most consumers.
