Western Digital Launches World's Fastest SATA HDD

Tue 2008-04-22 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
Hard drive manufacturer extraordinaire Western Digital has just updated their renowned Raptor model line with the introduction of the VelociRaptor, a 300GB 2.5-inch 10,000 RPM HDD, which they claim is the world’s fastest SATA hard drive. Yes, you read correctly, this new WD3000GLFS model sports a 2.5-inch form factor, but is enclosed in the innovative IcePack, a 3.5-inch mounting frame with a built-in heat sink.

Let’s see what they had to say:

“WD® (NYSE: WDC) announced today that it is now shipping WD VelociRaptor™ hard drives, the next generation of its 10,000 RPM SATA "Raptor" series of drives. Designed with an enterprise-class foundation, the new WD VelociRaptor hard drive is modified specifically for PC and Mac® enthusiasts and professional workstations. Destined to become the new high-performance favorite of these groups, the WD VelociRaptor hard drive comes packed with twice the capacity and a 35 percent performance increase over the previous generation.”

The press release certainly sounds impressive, but do you want to know the best part? The drive has already been reviewed, and the results are nothing short of stunning.

Check it out for yourself:

It is extremely refreshing to see some innovative design in the hard drive industry, and hopefully this lights a fire under the other manufacturers to create some of their own high-performance consumer models.
