ASUS Radeon HD 3850 X2 1GB Preview

Thu 2008-04-24 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
On April 3rd, ASUS officially launched its Radeon HD 3850 X2 1GB graphics card. However, since then there has been little to no information about this product. Well, not only it is now available for purchase, but PC Perspective has just posted a very brief preview of this new ASUS Radeon model.

Here’s an excerpt:

“Just last month we were speculating that a dual-GPU graphics card like the AMD Radeon HD 3870 X2 could be coming down the pipe but using the slightly slower AMD 3850 GPU. Turns out we were right and in fact we already have an ASUS EAH3850 X2 1GB card in house for testing.

The specifications for the ASUS EAH3850 X2 1GB card should look pretty familiar: 670 MHz core clock, 830 MHz memory clock with each GPU being allocated 512MB of GDDR3 memory. For all intents and purposes, this is EXACTLY the same design as the AMD HD 3870 X2 cards - since the single GPU HD 3870 and HD 3850 cards varied only on clock speed and memory sizes.”

Although nowhere as exciting as the EAH3850 TRINITY, the EAH3850X2/HTDI/1G will undoubtedly prove to be more important and popular product. This model currently retails for $350, which is $30-50 dollars cheaper than most HD 3870 X2 models. Not much cheaper, but then again, it’s not much slower either. However, due to lack of competition, there is obviously a little premium built into the price, so wait for Diamond, HIS, PowerColor, Sapphire, etc., to release their models.
