ASUS Striker II Extreme Motherboard Review

Mon 2008-04-28 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
Hardware Logic has posted a review of the ASUS Striker II Extreme, an Nvidia nForce 790i Ultra SLI-based DDR3 motherboard.

Here’s what they had to say:

“Being the flagship model motherboard is not easy. It is required to have the latest chipset, support the latest memory standard, keep up with the newest graphics technology, use only the best components, cater to the overclocking, gaming and hardware enthusiast crowd all at the same time and justify its high price with equally superior performance. ASUS nailed it. While this board is not for the faint of heart, slender wallet or novice user, it is a monster in every performance aspect I can think of. Its time for all other motherboards bow down and pay respect, the Striker II Extreme 790i Ultra SLI is here.”

The Striker II Extreme was designed as the best Triple SLI capable benchmarking platform on the market, and it arguably is the best. However, I am still not entirely convinced that it provides enough tangible benefits to warrant its $100+ price premium, even for the most hardcore overclockers. If you take a look in the Online Results Browser, you will see that the vast majority of top NVIDIA-based scores were achieved on EVGA and XFX nForce 790i Ultra SLI motherboards, so they certainly aren’t too shabby in the benchmarking department, and they are priced at a slightly more sane $320-350.
