MSI Unveils N9600GT Hybrid Freezer Graphics Card

Wed 2008-05-07 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
MSI has announced the new N9600GT Hybrid Freezer graphics card, which is outfitted with an innovative cooling system that turns off its fan when it is not required.

Here’s what they had to say:

"The N9600GT Hybrid Freezer comes with the "Hybrid Freezer" cooling technology that boasts the most power-saving environmental protection and the most efficient Hybrid Freezer cooling radiators. It provides users the most quiet and power-efficient application environment. The Hybrid Freezer cooling technology has a built-in fan interior fan for temperature control and utilizes 6mm thick heat pipes for effective thermal conductivity. The temperature will continue to monitor the heat of the GPU. When system executing 3D application and the temperature is higher, the fan will start rotating and will quickly disperse the heat. As executing 2D applications and the temperature is lower, the fan will automatically stop. The heat pipes and fins will remove the GPU's heat."

Aside from having slightly thicker heat pipes, the VGA cooler looks identical to the one used on many of MSI’s Overclocked Edition graphics card. Turning off the fan while in 2D is a good idea, and it will help reduce overall noise output, but calling it a power-saving feature is a stretch…
