GeForce 9600GT Review Roundup - Inno3D, MSI, Palit

Mon 2008-05-12 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
Has the diminishing price of the NVIDIA GeForce 9600GT motivated you to upgrade? Well, Hexus, ThinkComputers, and TweakTown have reviewed GeForce 9600GT’s from Inno3D, MSI, and Palit.

Let’s see what they had to say:

  • Hexus: Inno3D GeForce 9600 GT OC: closing in on £100:

“Priced at around £110 for the retail package, it's around £20 dearer than the company's own stock-clocked Armour model and, just as crucially, £10 more expensive than a Sapphire Radeon HD 3870 512MiB. Complicating matters further, the faster GeForce 8800 GT 512MiB is also available from a starting point of around £110.

Breaking that all down into sage buying advice, the Inno3D GeForce 9600 GT OC, whilst good, suffers from stunningly good competition.”

  • ThinkComputers: Palit GeForce 9600GT 1GB Sonic Video Card Review:

“The Palit 9600GT 1GB Sonic is definitely a card for the future. Upcoming games may very well appreciate the full gig of memory. HDMI-ready cards are just coming around, and the 9600GT Sonic is prepared for your LCD TV or home theater. Monitors with DisplayPort interface are beginning to surface, and once again, the Palit 9600GT is ready for them.

The heatpipe cooler works well, keeping the factory overclocked GPU to under 50C at load, with total silence. Though I didn't mention earlier, as I expected the backing plate/memory heatsink got quite warm, so Palit did well helping out the overclocked memory with a little cooling.”

  • TweakTown: MSI GeForce 9600GT 1GB OC Graphics Card:

“With the 1GB offering and 512MB model offering the same overclock and the same excellent performing cooler, it’s going to be hard to spend the extra money on a 1GB card when the 512MB offering is going to perform almost identically.

With that said though, if you find yourself needing a 1GB card the MSI offering is a good choice for a few reasons; the included HDMI adapter is good which is capable of carrying sound, and the cooler on it, while being dual slot does an excellent job of cooling the card at a reasonable noise level.”

For those who keep their graphics cards for 2-3 years, the Palit 9600GT 1GB Sonic is a good choice, simply because it has unprecedented connectivity features. If you decide that you want to use the card in an HTPC, you are ready to go with a dedicated HDMI port and an optical S/PDIF out port. If in 2 years you buy a new LCD monitor and it utilizes the DisplayPort interface, it will work perfectly with the Palit’s cutting-edge DisplayPort port. It may cost a little bit more, but you will likely save money in the long run. Having said, if you plan on upgrading within 12-18 months, just buy the cheapest 9600GT 512MB model that you can find, it will provide you with terrific Bang for the Buck.
