USB Flash Drive Review Roundup - Corsair, Kingston, OCZ, Super Talent

Wed 2008-05-14 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
Planning to upgrade from your old 256MB/512MB/1GB USB flash drive? Well, Bjorn3D, DriverHeaven, Futurelooks, TechwareLabs, and Viper Lair have reviewed USB flash drives from Corsair, Kingston, OCZ, and Super Talent.

Let’s see what they had to say:

  • Bjorn3D: Super Talent Pico: World Smallest Flash Drive:

“The Pico is one of the best USB storage devices that I have ever tested. Not only that it is small and portable, its transfer rate is excellent. Although you can find 16GB or 32GB flash drives on the market, these drives do not offer the same portability as the Pico offers. And for those who need larger storage space or may not like the “small” 8GB of space Pico offers may turn to 100+ GB HD based storage. Pico has a couple advantages over these hard drive based storage, namely the faster access time and the shear factor of super tiny.”

  • DriveHeaven: Kingston DT 400 & OCZ Rally2 Turbo:

“Our results show that the two flash drives are closely matched for read speeds on both file sizes with Kingston being slightly better with larger files and OCZ with smaller volumes of data. Looking next to read speeds we see that the OCZ device is a far superior performer, in some cases being over three times faster than the Kingston drive.”

  • Futurelooks: Corsair Survivor 32GB Ultra Rugged USB 2.0 Flash Drive Review:

“There is no doubt in my mind that the Corsair Survivor 32GB Ultra Rugged USB 2.0 Flash Drive is one tough mother. After enduring things that a regular USB drive would have disintegrated in, it’s safe to say that the Corsair Survivor is really a survivor. This machined chunk of ruggedness is not only sturdy, but the quality of the workmanship is superb. I was surprised to see how perfectly the machining made the two ends line up every time we screwed and unscrewed the barrel. Performance is also fairly decent, but gets faster once you upgrade to the Survivor GT Version if you require speed over storage capacity.”

  • Viper Lair: OCZ Technology 4GB Rally2 USB Flash Drive:

“The OCZ Technology 4GB Rally2 USB Flash Drive is the fastest flash drive I've had the opportunity to work with. The drive itself has a tough, durable feel to it given the chassis is made primarily out of aluminum. Thankfully, OCZ has one of the more classic types of logos, so the corporate branding doesn't over power the aesthetics of the device.

Ergonomically, the Rally2 is well designed. It's small, so you do increase the risk of losing it if you opt not to use the included lanyard, but at least you won't have anyone pointing at your pants asking it you're happy to see them.”

  • TechwareLabs: Corsair Voyager 32GB Flash Drive:

“The Corsair Voyager 32GB drive is simply a massive amount of storage in a small form and highly portable. Put this pen drive in your pocket and your taking with you as much information as you would like to carry with virtually no drawbacks. The Voyager has a great transfer rate for such a large drive which will come in handy when transferring those extra large files. With an online price of about $155 it represent an exceptional value in portable storage at about $4.84 per Gigabyte for fast memory in a single drive. Expect higher street prices so we would highly recommend purchasing the drive online and save your cash for other hardware.”
