AMD Announces Mainstream PC Gaming Initiative

Mon 2008-05-19 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
AMD has just announced the AMD GAME! initiative, which is intended to simplify and enhance the PC gaming experience for mainstream gamers, by establishing minimum system requirements that PC manufacturers must adhere to in order to participate in the program.

Let’s see what they had to say:

“This program is designed to help consumers select perfectly suited PCs for high-definition gaming. AMD GAME! platforms combine the powerful balance of multi-core processors, exceptional HD digital media2, and next-generation graphics processing power. Industry leaders including Acer, Alienware, Logitech and Microsoft are joining AMD to ensure consumers can easily identify PCs that deliver HD gaming and entertainment experiences out of the box.”

AMD is in a unique position to offer complete desktop system platforms , because they are the only company that is currently able to provide competitive CPUs, discrete GPUs, and chipsets. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that they would launch a mainstream initiative that is centered around the basic principles of the Spider platform. Truth be told, it’s an excellent strategy, however its success will depend heavily on how well they can market this initiative, and how many PC manufacturers actually decide to participate.
