VIA Nano “Isaiah” Processor Launched

Thu 2008-05-29 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
Today, VIA launched their new Nano power-efficient processors, and on queue, Benchmark Reviews, HotHardware, and PC Perspective have taken a closer look at this new technology.

  • Benchmark Reviews:

“On the 29th of May 2008 VIA announced the Nano CPU, a processor built from Isaiah architecture. Building on the market-leading energy efficiency of their existing VIA C7 processor family, the VIA Nano processor family offers as much as four times the performance within the same power range to extend VIA's performance per watt leadership, while identical pin compatibility with VIA C7 processors will ensure a smooth transition for OEMs and motherboard vendors, and provides them with an easy upgrade path for current system or board designs.”

  • HotHardware:

“Today though, VIA is ready to disclose a few more details regarding the Isaiah CPU architecture. First off, Isaiah-based processors now fall under the Nano brand. Due to their low-power design, VIA's Nano processors will initially be used to power a broad range of thin and light notebooks, but they will also appear in ultra mobile, mini-note type devices and small form factor, energy efficient "green" desktop systems as well.”

  • PC Perspective:

“Today marks one of the most pivotal days in the history of VIA Technologies; after essentially bowing out of the chipset market for AMD and Intel processors the combined CPU/platform division that was much maligned over the past decade as being stale and out of date now becomes the company's strongest asset. The VIA C7 processor has actually done very well for itself as a previous generation architecture and found its way into many UMPC and small form factor machines. More recently though VIA has been making noise about a completely new CPU architecture: the Isaiah core. With VIA's unveiling of the availability of the newly named VIA Nano Processor the company takes its first steps towards a much larger world.”

Unverified preliminary reports have the Isaiah architecture outperforming similarly clocked Intel Atom processors, so things are looking positive in the VIA camp. It will be interesting to see whether any devices that utilize this processor series are announced at Computex 2008.
