ASRock Penryn1600SLIX3-WiFi Motherboard Review

Tue 2008-07-15 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
MadShrimps has posted a review of the ASRock Penryn1600SLIX3-WiFi motherboard, which is based on the venerable nForce 680i SLI chipset.

Here’s an excerpt:

“However, I do wonder why people would try to save on a 3-Way SLI capable motherboard. People who buy three video cards probably have enough money to buy a more expensive motherboard with more tuning options.

In the end, I'm leaning forward to the theory that says that Asrock mainly produced this motherboard to show what can be done with older chipsets and what they can do in terms of 'making it work'. We've already shown you an Asrock that fits that category (DDR2/3 + AGP/PCI-e) and were quite pleased then, as well as we are now. Agreed, this is not an extra-ordinary design, but it does suit the Madshrimps ideology, which applauds thinking outside-the-box. While every other manufacturer produced their 780i motherboard to fit the needs of the 3-Way SLI users, Asrock looked at the white papers of the 680i chipset and saw that it was possible to both adapt 45nm and 3-Ways SLI, just like people as Sampsa of the hardware enthusiast scene do.”

This a novel, fully featured product with a very attractive price, however I can’t see anyone buying it for its Triple SLI capability…
