Power Supply Review Roundup - Akasa, BFG, OCZ & More
bit-tech, CPU3D, DriverHeaven,
JonnyGURU, Overclockers Online, PC Perspective, and XSReviews have reviewed power supplies from Akasa, BFG, Coolmax, OCZ, and Tuniq.
Let’s see what they had to say:
- bit-tech: BFG ES Series 800W PSU:
“We had high hopes for BFG's new PSU range and if you bought one without knowing what else was on offer, you won't be disappointed, after all it does certainly work well enough. However it's just not the best and by far not the cheapest you can buy. The box and bits are excellent, the design is good, the efficiency is exceptional and the warranty is un-paralleled, but it doesn't complete the package with the right cables, slightly low rail values and an exuberant price.”

- CPU3D: Coolmax CUQ-1350B 1350W Power Supply:
“The feature list of this unit is expansive, just to name a few; Quad +12V output rails, advanced double forward circuit and double-layer PCB, active power factor correction, high efficiency maximum 87%, color coded modular cable system, dual PCI-Express power connectors that fully supports SLI & Cross-Fire systems, nylon sleeved modular cables and gold plated terminals. While I may have never seen a Coolmax PSU before this review, and thus might have been wary of selecting them for my monster system build, after the review I feel confident in recommending this power supply for just such a scenario.”

- DriverHeaven: Akasa Power Xtreme 1200W Review:
“The Akasa PowerXtreme 1200W unit delivers very stable and reliable electrical performance which is the most important thing when you want to power a workstation PC or a very powerful gaming PC with four PCIe VGA cards. Akasa have created a good design with high quality components and built a very reliable unit. The supply is also quite silent given its high power output and only under extreme loads will it become audible.”

- JonnyGURU: BFG LS680 680W Power Supply Review:
“BFG tries hard for a good budget unit the average Joe can buy as a simple upgrade for his ailing 300W Deer, and for the most part succeeds in every way except the one that matters most - the unit is not very competitive at its current price level. At $20 cheaper, the story would be different, but until that happens there are some better options out there.”

- Overclockers Online: OCZ EliteXStream 800W PSU:
“OCZ's EliteXStream 800W is an all-around solid unit. The unit handled our tests without a sweat and held stable even in the harshest environment. As we have seen today, its performance is on par with much more expensive units.
But, besides performance, the OCZ EliteXStream comes with a few nice perks. The large 120mm fan allows for superb cooling while keeping noise to a minimum. The partially sleeved wires are a nice touch, however, of course, we would much rather see fully sleeved wires.
The EliteXStream is truly a testament of affordability combining all the features we would expect to see in much more expensive units, but in a mid hundred package.”

- PC Perspective: OCZ EliteXStream 1000W Power Supply Review:
“The OCZ EliteXStream 1000W proved to be an excellent power supply and certainly warrants serious consideration if you are in the market for a high-quality, high-capacity PSU. It produced excellent voltage regulation and delivers very clean outputs with good efficiency. As if that weren’t enough, the EliteXStream does its job quietly, is 80Plus and NVIDIA SLI certified, and comes backed with OCZ’s premium PowerSwap 5-Year warranty. All that in a relatively compact chassis that only measures 160mm deep.”

- XSReviews: Tuniq Miniplant 950w Review:
“For a 950w PSU this performed very well. However there are some issues which need to be resolved for Tuniq to be on for a winner here. Firstly the design, non-modular designs are less popular and I found it very frustrating as there were too many cables lying around my case. Secondly the fan, it has an annoying noise to it and isn’t silent. Silent PSUs are much more in demand nowadays so the simple action of using a different fan could really boost this PSU’s market potential. Other than that though, it's a pretty good product. Nothing outstanding, but if you think it justifies the price tag, it shouldn't let you down.”
