Crucial & OCZ 32GB Solid State Drive Reviews

Fri 2008-07-18 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
DriverHeaven and Overclock3D have reviewed 32GB solid state drives from Crucial and OCZ.

Here’s what they had to say:

  • DriverHeaven: Crucial 32GB Solid State Drive Review:

“The Crucial SSD device has many advantages over mechanical drives. For a start there is better shock resistance, much lower power consumption, considerably less heat dissipation and far greater reliability. However it has a great advantage over the first generation MLC NAND SSD drives as well; as it is considerably faster. The first MLC drives would struggle to maintain a constant read speed of 20MB/s, while the Crucial SSD is 6 times faster than that. It can easily outperform high performance desktop mechanical HDDs, so it is safe to conclude that its performance will crush any 2.5" laptop mechanical drives which are considerably slower.”

  • Overclock3D: OCZ SSD 32GB Solid State Hard Disk:

“However, speed isn't enough to help the OCZ SSD when it comes to use on a performance desktop PC. While the drive may have been able to match and even beat the performance of the lightning fast Western Digital Velociraptor in benchmarks such as Windows Startup and Game loading times it really falls behind when it comes down to file copying and general write-intensive tasks. Sure the SSD is able to maintain an equal level of performance across the entire disk, but with the Velociraptor managing to almost match the average transfer speed of the SSD with its minimum transfer speed the OCZ SSD is going to have to get quite a bit faster before it can win any benchmarks hands-down.”

Between these two models, the OCZ is the better purchase. Not only does it have faster sequential write speeds, but it's also quite a bit cheaper. Having said that, OCZ’s brand new Core series SSDs are starting to appear in the retail channel, and they are quite reasonably priced.
