Power Supply Review Roundup - BFG, NZXT, Zalman, & More

Fri 2008-07-25 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
DragonSteelMods, JonnyGURU, PC Perspective, Tweaknews, and Tweaktown have reviewed 550W to 1200W power supplies from BFG, NZXT, Rosewill, Seventeam, Thermaltake, and Zalman.

Let’s see what they had to say:

  • DragonSteelMods: NZXT Performance Power Series PP800 800 Watt Power Supply Review:

“The NZXT PP800 power supply is not only very stable under load but also very quiet, these are two things that most people want from their PSUs, and NZXT delivers what people want, in both quality and design.

The problem I had with the 8-pin connector is specific to mounting the PSU on the bottom of the case, so this will not effect everyone, but it's still concern and a problem, the PP800 could have gotten a perfect score were it not for this slight problem, but I can still recommend this power supply to anyone looking to add a bit more power to their system.”

  • JonnyGURU: BFG LS550 550W Power Supply Review:

“Once again, BFG's value oriented LS series aims to give us a well performing unit at a decent price, and once again it just barely misses the mark. I do hope there's room in the future for the price to come down some, because these really are some decent little units, but when you're competing in price with independently regulated units like the Corsairs while using old group regulated designs... sorry, but that's not a hard choice for me to make.”

  • JonnyGURU: Seventeam Thundering 1000W Power Supply Review:

“Someday Seventeam's ship is bound to come in with a recommendation here at jonnyGURU.com, but that day has not yet arrived. The ST-1000E-AD offers great performance, but this is bogged down by middling efficiency, half-assed sleeving, and a fan that could launch the space shuttle and is very nearly as loud (small exaggeration, there). Keep trying guys - I know you have it in you.”

  • PC Perspective: Zalman ZM750-HP 750W Power Supply Review‏:

“Zalman has successfully added another high-quality power supply to their line up. The ZM750-HP power supply’s voltage regulation, line regulation and cross-loading regulation are all very good. The overall efficiency is excellent and AC ripple noise suppression is very good. Under normal operating conditions (below 500W load) the ZM750-HP is virtually silent. The PSU comes fitted with a good assortment of hard-wired and modular cables that can support dual core CPUs and multiple video cards. However, the cables are only 20” long, which may prove a bit short for use in some larger cases.”

  • Tweaknews: Thermaltake Toughpower 1200 Watt Power Supply Review:

“With best-of-class specs and a generous feature set with configuration options, the Thermaltake Toughpower 1200W is tough to beat. The Toughpower line represents Thermaltake's flagship PSU offerings, and the 1200W is a worthy addition, building on a tradition of power, stability and cutting edge features. The fit and finish is flawless, the connectors are numerous and the cable lengths are generous. It's very quiet and efficient, keeping noise and heat to a minimum, yet powerful enough to feed even the most power hungry components without missing a beat. The informative manual is also a plus, clarifying the ins-and-outs of the various VGA options this PSU can provide.”

  • Tweaktown: Rosewill RX630-S-B Xtreme 630W PSU‏:

“As noted early on, Rosewill is in the business of selling quality products at a good price. This has been their business model for a long while, and the RX630 Xtreme is a worthy addition to their product line. Aimed at gamers, this power supply provided surprisingly good results given the test conditions it was put through. With a performance that was acceptable and a very nice outward appearance, this PSU is worth considering.”
