Radeon HD 4870 Review Roundup – Palit & Sapphire

Fri 2008-07-25 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
Hardware Secrets, High Tech Review, and The Tech Lounge have reviewed Radeon HD 4870 graphics cards from Palit and Sapphire.

Let’s see what they had to say:

  • Hardware Secrets: Sapphire HD 4870 Video Card Review:

“Sapphire HD 4870 and GeForce GTX 260 achieved a similar performance in most scenarios. The only time that GeForce GTX 260 was faster than Sapphire HD 4870 was on Call of Duty 4 at 2560x1600 maxing out image quality settings (11% faster). In all other configurations on this game both cards achieved the same performance level.

Sapphire HD 4870 was faster than GeForce GTX 260 in some games. On Crysis it was around 15% faster when we set image quality settings to “high”, but both cards achieved the same performance when image quality was set at “low”. On Half-Life: Episode 2 HD 4870 was 6-8% faster when image quality was set at “low” and 19-23% faster when we maxed out image quality settings.”

  • High Tech Review: Sapphire HD4870 Review:

“After we reviewed the Sapphire HD4850 we thought we had seen the best that ATI/AMD had to offer. We found just how wrong we were when we ran our first test with the Sapphire HD 4870. Here is a video card that has Nvidia scratching it's head try to find card that will compete with it. Being a true ATI fan boy I think it is great that the roles have finally been reverse and for now ATI has the best performing and selling cards available today. It may be a bit early to forecast this but if I were picking the top video card of year it would either be the ATI/AMD 3870 X2 or the AMD/ATI HD4870.”

  • The Tech Lounge: Palit HD 4870 512MB Video Card:

“For $200, the 4850 has a lot of competition. For $300, the 4870 is without challenge. Which, if it had a little more direct competition, I think people would be quicker to criticize it. Primarily, I think 512MB is too little RAM for the card; it could do a lot better anti-aliasing with some elbow room. Secondarily, the card consumes a lot more power than ATI cards do, traditionally. It's not a huge jump, but it's not a small amount, either.”

While the Radeon HD 4870 is an incredible value and performs flawlessly, the GeForce GTX 260 has received some impressive price cuts recently. As a result, it is no longer a clear cut victory for HD 4870. You really have to do your research and see which GPU performs the best in the applications and games that you use the most.
