Radeon HD 4000 Series Graphics Cards Reviews

Wed 2008-10-01 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
Benchmark Reviews, Legit Reviews, Modders-Inc, and TweakTown have reviewed Radeon HD 4550/4670/4870 graphics cards from ATI, Force3D, and Sapphire.

Let’s see what they had to say:

  • Benchmark Reviews: Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 Toxic Video Card:

“In conclusion, my final recommendation on the Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 Toxic graphics card is very good but at the moment it's nearly impossible to procure. On its own accord the 4870 Toxic would occasionally reach the level of performance seen from the GeForce GTX 260, but never completely dominate over it. Taking the expected price into consideration, you have to look at other comparable offerings. It's no surprise that CrossFire and CrossFireX are available on just about every single motherboard that fits an Intel or AMD processor; the same is hardly true for the SLI. So then it's down to price. Since NVIDIA submitted to ATI's price point, both the GTX 260 and Radeon 4870 are now offered around the same cost. At the end of this point there's really no decisive victory to be handed out. In summary, the Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 Toxic Edition is an outstanding product with unbelievable cooling improvements over the stock version, but the decision is going to come down to pricing and availablity.”

  • Legit Reviews: ATI Radeon HD 4550 Video Card Review:

“The ATI Radeon HD 4550 graphics card is aimed at the entry level graphics card market, which means those wanting to spend less than $50 or less on a graphics card. For that price range the Radeon HD 4550 faces tough competition as for roughly the past week the GeForce 9600 GSO could be had for $36 after a coupon and rebate over at Newegg. The NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GSO killed the ATI Radeon HD 4550 in the games, so for those looking for the best price versus performance card that is hard to ignore. The GeForce 9500 GT is another card that was ahead in nearly all of the benchmarks and it can be found for $43 after rebate. With both the GeForce 9500 GT and GeForce 9600 GSO in the $36-$50 price range the Radeon HD 4550 has a tough road ahead if it wants to move off store shelves.”

  • Modders-Inc: Sapphire HD 4670 Graphics Card:

“Placing two of the HD 4670 in CrossFireX mode would certainly increase you performance for a very low investment of about $160 USD. Borrowing a few scores from around the net for CrossfireX we see that an average of 4500-5000 points are gained in 3DMark06 and it beats the $199.00 USD 4850. When put up against NVIDIA's 9800GT it does walk all over it, but that card is only about $130.00 USD. So for a few dollars more you can have a very reasonable priced dual card setup and is a great price to performance bargain. Two of these cards in a Small Form Factor case would be an awesome setup for a LAN machine. No worries about packing in a super sized power supply and no PCI-e power is needed.”

  • TweakTown: Force3D Radeon HD 4870 Black Edition Graphics Card:

“We haven’t seen anything from Force3D before, but it seems like they know what they’re doing. The decision to go the Arctic Cooling route is a good idea; it’s a brand that most people know and ultimately the cooler really does perform extremely well. While it might be a little louder, the number of degrees it’s able to shave off the temperature makes it well and truly worth it.

While the overclock isn’t the highest we’ve seen to date, it’s enough to give us a consistent boost in games and has the ability to really bite at the heels of the more expensive GTX 280.”

I'm not particularly impressed with the Radeon HD 4550, but the other models are top-notch…if you can find them.
