500W-1050W Power Supply Review Roundup – BFG, Corsair, OCZ & More
BigBruin, bit-tech, CPU3D, Techwarelabs,
TweakTown, and XSReviews have reviewed
500W-1050W power supplies from BFG, Corsair, Hiper, OCZ, QPower, Rosewill, and Silver Power.
Here’s what they had to say:
- BigBruin: BFG Tech LS-680 680W Power Supply Review:
“While these high powered units may have a (small) market, you can definitely power a modern system with a quality power supply with a much more reasonable total power rating. The BFG Tech LS-680 680W power supply is a perfect example of this. It may only be rated for 680W total power, but it provides quad 12V rails rated for 20A each, four PCI Express power connections, and other features necessary to keep a rather power hungry system up and running without issue.
In addition to providing the power necessary to keep a modern system running reliably, the LS-680 offers other desirable features such as an ample number of connections, long power leads, high efficiency, low noise, and attractive styling.”

- BigBruin: Rosewill RX630-S-B Xtreme Series 630W Power Supply Review:
“Before the review started I didn't know what to expect from for the Rosewill RX630-S-B Xtreme Series 630W power supply. The published features and specifications were strong, and from what I had read elsewhere on the web the general opinion seemed positive. I just wasn't sure that a Rosewill power supply priced under $90 was really going to impress, and I worried that too much of that small budget had been spent on the aesthetics.
In the end I was not only pleased with the performance, but pleasantly surprised to find four potentiometers inside for fine tuning of the voltage rails. While each of the three main rails tested was very stable and within specification, it may be necessary to adjust the 12V rail as it fluctuated between 12.42V (idle) and 12.45V (load), both of which are higher than I have ever seen.”

- bit-tech:
Silver Power's SP-S850 power supply:
“So all in all, the Silver Power SP-S850 is a bit of a no frills but essentially solid PSU - it does what it says on the tin and falls around mid table in an efficiency list mostly made up of PSUs that are more expensive and/or lower power. The styling has a quirky retro-esq feel that to some might be a little too plain, but we kind of like the way it tries to be different. Not everyone will want the flashy blue LEDs though and some way to turn these on or off would have been nice.
When you dive a bit deeper though you do find out where Silver Power has made a few decisions that don’t quite cut it in our opinion. It's not the quietest out there, especially as you ramp up the juice and the internal heatsinks, while nice and flashy gold, are not as large as some we've seen - that's part of the reason why the unit needs to get louder than we'd like.”

- CPU3D:
OCZ 1000W EliteXStream Power Supply:
“OCZ have produced a very good PSU with excellent build quailty and stability. Its powerful single +12V rail @ 80A, capable of upto 1000W of power will definitely draw the crowds. It's certified 80 Plus and SLI-Ready, with an impressive 5 years warranty ... what more do you want?”

- Techwarelabs:
Corsair HX620W Power Supply:
“As you can see in the table above, the HX620W power supply from Corsair is not only nearly spot-on with the target voltages, but is extremely stable at those voltages and a swing of 0.01V is essentially negligible. Overall, this is a premium quality power supply, and it is extremely quiet as well. The HX620W is available for $170 from Newegg, or if a 520W power supply is plenty for you, consider the HX520W at $115 (just make sure you're not cutting this too close). This may seem like a lot of money, but it is absolutely crucial to make sure you are getting a stable power supply.”

- TweakTown:
Hiper Type R Mark-II 880 Watt Power Supply:
“Once everything is said and done, the Hiper Type R II 880 performs very well under pressure. Even with a couple of power hungry video boards sucking power for all their worth, this model did a very good job of not only providing enough power, but also doing so with next to no fluctuations in the power levels. This in itself bodes well for a recommendation, but with this product there is also more to consider.
While few power supplies can produce a WOW factor, this Hiper unit does a fair job of providing just this by including a full time powered device recharging port as well as an 8-port USB hub. This is something that you just don’t see in your run of the mill PSU. Add to this the active cooling that was very quiet and you have the beginnings of a very worthy contender.”

QPower 1050w Review:
“For a £100 PSU, this unit performs pretty damn well. It's got nice tight rails that fluctuate only slightly when moving from idle to load states; though the 12v rail lets the team down by not being particularly close to the ideal. The impressively low noise levels - minus the slight electronic ticking - is also a great feature of the unit.
While the QPower 1050 from, I suppose either "e" or "Andyson" is in no way perfect, but it covers almost all the bases very well indeed. The only bit I'm not too impressed by is the loose 12v rail. If you don't mind a slightly imperfect set of rails, and want a quiet and affordable PSU that's capable of powering a very high end setup, then this QPower will most definitely suit you to the ground.”

Check out TweakTown’s review of the Hiper model, that is one interesting power supply.
