Sapphire Toxic Radeon HD4870 512MB Graphics Card Reviews

Mon 2008-10-06 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
BigBruin and ThinkComputers have reviewed the Sapphire Toxic Radeon HD4870 512MB Graphics Card, which features an improved cooler and overclocked GPU/Memory speeds.

Here’s what they had to say:

  • BigBruin:

“In terms of single GPU performance, the Radeon HD4870 set the bar pretty high, and the Sapphire Toxic Radeon HD4870 512MB graphics card had its work cut out for it to do much better. With a factory overclock of 30MHz on the GPU and 100MHz on the memory, the Toxic version generally did perform better, but not always by much. Considering that the GPU is only running 4% faster than the reference design, you really can't expect an incredible performance boost.

The one area that the Toxic Radeon HD4870 really shines is in cooling performance. Running twenty to thirty degrees cooler than the stock speed HD4870 is quite an accomplishment, made even more enjoyable because the cooler gives the card an aggressive appearance that is really unique. The only downside to this great cooling is that the fan does get rather loud during normal usage.”

  • ThinkComputers:

“The HD 4870 Toxic is a nice video card. Performance is really awesome. I wish I had a GTX 260 to compare it with, but no matter, it is obvious that if the reference clocked 4870 will outperform one, the Toxic will seal the deal. With a full bundle, great cooler, and awesome performance, the Sapphire HD 4870 Toxic is the card to get.

The Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 Toxic isn't in the retailers in the states yet, or at least I couldn't find it. Their 1GB 4870 sells for $300, so I expect this card to sell for that or maybe a little less. Anywhere around the $300 mark finds this card a value, if you're looking for a high-performance card. ThinkComputers awards the Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 Toxic 512MB Factory Overclocked Video Card a 10 out of 10 score.”

This seems like a very good Radeon HD 4870 model, but as the reviewers mentioned availability seems to be almost non-existent at this point.
