750W-900W Power Supply Review Roundup – Antec, Lian Li, Thermaltake & More

Wed 2008-10-08 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
TechwareLabs, ThinkComputers, TweakNews, Virtual-Hideout, and XSReviews have reviewed 750W to 900W power supplies from Antec, Cooler Master, Inwin, Lian Li, and Thermaltake.

Let’s see what they had to say:

  • TechwareLabs: Lian Li Maxima Force Extreme Power Supply PS-A750GB 750W:

“For primarily being an enthusiast case manufacturer, Lian Li puts out a hell of a power supply. They use quality parts, deliver on voltage performance and stability These are some of the most important factors when deciding on a power supply for your rig. The PS-A750GB is priced fairly at $177 and will be available October 20 on Newegg. Some more certifications would have been nice (like Crossfire and SLI certification), but this is not a deal breaker, as this power supply is more than capable of handling the load. With fair pricing and quality parts, it's hard not to recommend the PS-A750GB.”

  • ThinkComputers: Thermaltake Toughpower 850W Modular ESA Compliant Power Supply Review:

“The Thermaltake Toughpower Cable Management ESA 850 runs $260 at my favorite online retailer. That puts it on the upper end of 850 watt power supplies, but considering it has additional circuitry for ESA, along with being modular and having such a high efficiency rating, and carrying Thermaltake's reputation and 5-year warranty, I'd have to consider it a value. ThinkComputers.org scores the Thermaltake Toughpower Cable Management ESA 850 watt PSU a 10 out of 10 score.”

  • TweakNews: Cooler Master Ultimate Circuit Protection UCP-900WATT Power Supply Review:

“Cooler Master's UCP 900W has performed admirably throughout several days of testing while having an attractive aesthetic finish to complete the overall product. It's quiet and stable with plenty of power, has nicely sleeved cables while providing plenty of well organized SATA and videocard connections. On the other hand, I was a bit disappointed by the fact that no grommet was provided, and the manual could have included some information about power distribution to the four rails. But these are relatively minor annoyances compared to the overall excellent performance and apparent quality of the UCP 900W as a whole.”

  • Virtual-Hideout: Antec Signature 850 Watt Power Supply Review:

“Not much more can be said that the meter couldn't. It's a strong PSU to say the least and can afford a bit more wattage over the top which I suspect was intentional on Antec's part. The Antec Signature 850 Watt Power Supply is a stronger and more stable PSU than previous generations. The improved circuitry tightened up every feature of the PSU. Features like the voltage, power efficiency, and fluctuation levels where we most need them.

Of course, we can attribute them to the Dual Layer PCB and Voltage Regulation Modules. Any time a bit of extra engineering can be applied to improve the performance of a PSU, it's a great benefit and welcomed improvement. This is an Antec attribute. About the only thing that could use a touch up or two would be the PSU chassis. Another model with a polished paint job and/or LED or two that keeps in line with the Gamer series enclosures.”

  • XSReviews: InWin Commander 750w Review:

“The InWin Commander 750w is a very stable PSU, with some fantastically tight rails. It really has some of the best I have ever seen, and it's PF and wattage ratings are excellent also. True it's not completely silent- though it's quiet enough for most - and its price is a little higher than similarly watted units, but the extra expenditure is easily worth it for the improved performance.

This PSU was able to power our rather hefty test rig, while having some of the best rails around, and it's nice and quiet. What more do you need?”
