Radeon HD 4870 Review Roundup - AMD, ASUS, Palit

Wed 2008-10-08 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
bit-tech, HotHardware, Techgage have reviewed Radeon HD 4870 graphics cards from AMD, ASUS, and Palit.

Here’s what they had to say:

  • bit-tech: AMD's ATI Radeon HD 4870 1GB:

“At anywhere between £187 and £200, including VAT, the Radeon HD 4870 1GB appears to represent pretty good value for money. It’s not only cheaper (and better-performing) than the various GeForce GTX 260+ cards on the market, but it’s also not that much more expensive than the pre-overclocked GeForce GTX 260s out there as well. In most scenarios, it’s actually not too far behind Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 280 – a card that costs around £80 more.

When you compare it to the Radeon HD 4870 512MB, which retails for around £170 these days, you still appear to be getting a good buy as well. It costs around eight percent more and in some circumstances you’re getting performance increases much bigger than that, even at 1,920 x 1,200 – the screen resolution this card looks to be targeting. Of course, there are scenarios where there will be little-to-no benefit, but they’re to be expected anyway – not all games are completely GPU bound and in those games you’ll see very little benefit from a faster graphics card, period.”

  • HotHardware: ASUS EAH4870 TOP Radeon HD 4870:

“The ASUS EAH4870 TOP performed as we expected it to for the most part. It, of course, offers a nice bit of extra performance over a Radeon HD 4870 with reference clocks while performing significantly better than a Radeon HD 4850, especially when the resolution and eye candy are cranked up. Furthermore, the EAH4870 TOP trades victories back and forth with our reference GeForce GTX 260.”

  • Techgage: Palit Radeon HD 4870 Sonic Dual Edition:

“Let's face it. The overclock available with a flick of the switch on this Sonic card is small, and the differences in real-world tests are minimal. What makes this card so great is the general performance we've come to appreciate, along with the features and cooler. It's all made better by the fact that despite the additions, the card is still priced less than most of the competition.

The card features a robust and effective cooler, and a DisplayPort connection built right in. Past that, there is an adapter included for both HDMI and VGA support, so the card pretty-well has it all: performance, features and a great price. It's impossible to go wrong with this card, and once again, Palit has earned itself one of our Editor's Choice awards.”
