Self-Contained Water Cooling Kit Reviews

Tue 2009-01-06 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
Bjorn3D, DriverHeaven, Legit Reviews, MadShrimps have reviewed self-contained water cooling kits from CoolIT, Cooler Master, NorthQ, and Xirex.

Here's what they had to say:

  • Bjorn3D: Cooler Master Aquagate Max:

"The Cooler Master Aquagate Max did a good job at beating air cooling, but this does come at a price. With a retail price of $230 USD, the TRUE Black is much cheaper, at around only $70 USD. You do get more performance, but is it really worth an extra $160? Some would say it is. Personally, it's not my money I am spending, so the decision is up to you. If you want the absolute max overclock, I would say go for liquid. If you're just an everyday Joe who's new to overclocking, I would stay with air.

  • DriverHeaven: NorthQ Siberian Tiger II Water Cooler:

"The NorthQ Siberian Tiger II is a competent and simple water cooling solution, designed for people who want better performance than an air cooler but don't want to bother with a DIY water cooling kit. That said, the dual radiator and the short tubing force the user to either buy a case with two 120mm fans at the rear or top side of the case, or modify their own case to fit the radiator which ruins the whole 'easy to install' part. If you have a case which can house the dual radiator (or if you are willing to buy one) and want a product which can be installed with relative ease and perform better than a simple air cooler, the Siberian Tiger II could very well be what you are looking for. • Legit Reviews: CoolIT Systems Domino A.L.C. Water Cooler:

"The performance of the Domino A.L.C. simply blew me away like no other cooler has in years. When the performance numbers showed that the Domino A.L.C. was outperforming the Thermaltake BigWater 760is I was floored to say the least. The price tag on the Thermaltake BigWater 760is is $149, which is more than double that of the Domino A.L.C. and it performed worse. This just goes to show that a water cooling kit needs to be a well rounded and polished to get the best performance. CoolIT Systems seems to have the Domino A.L.C. setup with the optimal hardware and water flow to have a winner on their hands. At first I was going to give the Domino A.L.C. the Legit Reviews Value Award, but I think that would be short changing a great product that offers more than just a sexy price tag. The CoolIT Domino A.L.C. is more than worthy of our Editor's Choice award and I can't wait to see what CoolIT Systems is designing for next year!"

  • MadShrimps: Xirex Liquid Cooling Starter Set:

"My colleague Geoffrey has summed it all up quite nicely; the Xirex kit offers an excellent solution to dip your toe into the water cooling market, after you have checked compatibility the installation is very straight forward. While the plexi mounting plate is multi-platform ready, its large size does prevent a good fit on some of the more popular enthusiast and mainstream motherboards, the kit also misses a back plate, something it can definitely use, as without it the motherboard tends to bend due to the pressure mounting. The included tubing is quite stiff, so harder to make short bends. Overall quality is surprisingly good for such an affordable all-in-one kit.

However when it comes down to actually seeing the kit in action I was less impressed. Performance is sub par, unable to match a more affordable Thermalright Ultra-120 HSF which is easier to install and definitely with less risk. This Swiftech Apogee outclasses the smaller Xirex unit, which was pretty much expected."

The CoolIT Domino A.L.C is definitely the standout product in this roundup, and it offers excellent Bang for the Buck. Two thumbs up!
