CPU Cooler Review Roundup - Akasa, Nexus, Sunbeam & More

Tue 2009-01-13 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
DriverHeaven, Frostytech, and TweakTown have reviewed CPU coolers from Akasa, Coolage, Nexus, NorthQ, and Sunbeam.

Let's see what they had to say:

  • DriverHeaven: Sunbeam and NorthQ CPU Coolers Review:

"The Sunbeam Core-Contact Freezer is another heatsink which takes advantage of a proven design by using a heatpipe/fin/fan combination to dissipate heat and keep the CPU core cool. It doesn’t perform as well as the best heatsinks on the market but it also doesn't cost as much. At £28.74 inc vat the Core-Contact Freezer is competitively priced for the performance. The bundle isn’t bad either, providing all the necessary parts for operation, including a fan and wire brackets. Sunbeam has also thrown in a full sized tube of their fantastic Tuniq TX-2 Thermal Compound. Additionally, the fan included with the package maintains a fairly quiet volume throughout operation, even when running at full speed."

  • Frostytech: Akasa Nero AK-967 Heatsink Review‏:

"Results like these paint a clear picture of what to expect from the Akasa Nero AK-967 heatsink. At full fan speed the Nero AK-967 is an excellent high performance cooler for Intel and AMD processors that operates quietly. Decreasing fan speed to the bare minimum will net you whisper quiet operation, but with a significant rise in temperatures - to the average level in this reference chart. Bottom line, don't mess around with the Akasa Nero AK-967's fan. Recommended for high performance Intel and AMD processor cooling."

  • Frostytech: Coolage Frozen Orb Z924 HDC Heatsink Review‏:

Ultimately the Coolage Frozen Orb Z924 HDC provides no more than average performance at full fan speed, and satisfactory results when operating in quiet mode. The heatsink is suitable for energy efficient 85W processors, but for higher TDP wattage chips the fan should be run at full tilt. Clearly though, if height is not an issue there are very many other heatsinks to choose from which offer both cooler and quieter performance."

  • TweakTown: Nexus FLC-3000 Universal CPU Cooler Review:

"The Nexus FLC-3000 is a really quiet cooling solution to any case. Their goal in making life quieter around the PC was achieved, as the FLC-3000 was hardly audible while at idle and at load speeds. While this version of the cooler is a bit more compact on the one side, the overall height is a bit taller as well.

Overall performance of this cooler was as good as I had expected. The FLC-3000 stays on par with the sound levels of its brethren; the temperatures were as much as 7.5° Celcius behind the XiR 3500. "
