700W-800W Power Supply Review Roundup

Wed 2009-07-01 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
Hardware Secrets and PC Perspective have reviewed various 700W to 800W power supplies from BFG, OCZ, Seventeam, and SilverStone.

Let's see what they had to say:

  • Hardware Secrets: BFG ES-800 Power Supply Review:

"BFG ES-800 isn’t the best product available in the market, but it is also not the worse. If you decide to buy this product, you need to make sure that your serial number starts with 0835 or greater, otherwise you will have a huge electrical noise problem. Also, if you decide to buy it, you must register within 30 days of buying it, otherwise you will lose the lifetime warranty provided by BFG and get only a louse 1-year warranty.

If you have a unit with production batch lower than 0835 (most likely 0804), contact BFG and ask them to replace your unit, because your model is completely flawed."

  • Hardware Secrets: Seventeam ST-750P-AF Power Supply Review:

"It is good to see Seventeam finally entering the US retail market. From our experience their products are honest and present a good cost/benefit ratio for the mainstream user.

Talking specifically about ST-750P-AF, it presents high 84%-85% efficiency when you pull between 40% and 60% from its labeled capacity, i.e. between 150 W and 450 W from it. Under other loads efficiency isn’t the best in the world, but at the same time isn’t the worst."

  • PC Perspective: OCZ Fatal1ty Champion Series 700W PSU Review‏:

"The OCZ Fatal1ty Champion Series 700W PSU delivered excellent voltage regulation with clean DC outputs and good efficiency. The Fatal1ty 700W PSU is quiet during normal operation and includes a good compliment of fixed cables/connectors. And let’s not forget OCZ backs the Fatal1ty 700W PSU with their 5-year PowerSwap warranty. It was co-developed by a gamer for gamers and it delivers the goods! Overall, the Fatal1ty 700W is an excellent PSU that will make most any gamer proud.

The OCZ Fatal1ty Champion Series 700W PSU is currently available and has an average street price of around 129.99 USD. "

  • PC Perspective: SilverStone ST70EF 700W Power Supply Review‏:

"The SilverStone Element ST70EF 700W PSU delivered excellent voltage regulation with very good efficiency. The ST70EF is quiet, runs cool during normal operation, and includes a good compliment of fixed cables/connectors. The only weakness we found was relatively high levels of AC ripple on the DC outputs when the PSU was subjected to extreme loads.

The SilverStone ST70EF PSU is currently available and typically sells for around $189.99 USD. This is definitely on the expensive side when you compare it to similar high-quality PSUs (like the OCZ 700W PSU at $129 we reviewed a couple weeks ago)."

While these are all solid power supplies, if you are in the market for a 700W to 800W unit, you absolutely must take a look at Corsair's stupendous new HX750W.
