400W-550W Power Supply Review Roundup

Thu 2009-07-02 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
CPU3D, Hardware Secrets, PureOverclock and Tech-Reviews have reviewed 400W to 550W power supplies from Corsair, OCZ, Rocketfish, and Thermaltake.

Let's see what they had to say:

  • CPU3D: OCZ Fatal1ty 550W Modular PSU‏:

"The Fatal1ty 550W PSU is OCZ's first modular power supply in their Fatal1ty series ... and I was more than surprised to see how well it actually performed. What's more, the overall build quality is also very good, with high quality components used in its construction.

In our tests, both power efficiency and stability were very good with very little voltage fluctuations. Certified 80Plus, the OCZ Fatal1ty 550W can reach upto 82% power efficient, which is extremely good. The power supply has 2 separate +12V rails @ 25A each, which is more than enough to power-up the most demanding of components. In fact, during our "Peltier 240W Test" at full load, the voltage on the +12V rail only dropped to +11.84V, which is very good considering the maximum output reached 400W. This was expected during heavy loads."

  • Hardware Secrets: Corsair CX400W Power Supply Review:

"Corsair CX400W is an excellent product for the regular user that is building a PC with just one video card. It provides enough cables and they are long, allowing you to easily install this power supply inside a full tower case.

Efficiency was great for an entry-level product, peaking almost 84%. Voltages were very close to their nominal values and ripple and noise were practically non-existent."

  • Hardware Secrets: Rocketfish 550 W Power Supply Review:

"We must say that we were really impressed by this new Rocketfish power supply. Although it is not really a 550 W unit, it is a decent 500 W power supply and available for a not so bad price (USD 90 on any Best Buy store), which is unique, as Best Buy is certainly not know for having the best prices around. Of course it could cost less, but the advantage of this unit is that you can find it on any Best Buy and may be a good buy when you need a decent power supply over the weekend and/or can't wait for the delivery from your favorite on-line store.

Rocketfish achieved a high 85% efficiency when we pulled up to 300 W, which is more than anyone thinking of buying this unit will pull anyway."

  • PureOverclock: Thermaltake Litepower 450W:

"The Thermaltake Litepower 450W is a power supply that delivers good features and solid performance when heavily loaded with power-hungry components. From a feature standpoint, while the unit obviously doesn't support SLI/CrossFire setups and looks awfully plain in a grey finish, its 80 PLUS BRONZE certified and packs quite a punch for a little unit From a functional standpoint, the Litepower 450W boasts very good voltage regulation and efficiency, and a fairly quiet operation."

  • Tech-Reviews: OCZ FATAL1TY 550w PSU Review:

"There are many flaws with PSU’s, most being their fixed cables which in turn ruin the aesthetics and the user friendliness of the unit. With the OCZ Fatal1ty 550w however it seems that these issues are addressed and eliminated, although the modular design is not unique it certainly does help this products saleability.
Bottom Line: If you want ultimate performance with the most stable rails possible then consider another PSU, if you want good performance at a reasonable price and you don’t want to be able to hear it… then the OCZ Fatal1ty 550w is definitely one to consider."

All these power supplies are fine for a non-overclocked quad-core processor and mainstream graphics card configuration, which says a lot about the much higher quality of modern power supplies.
