3RSystem Iceage 80 & Iceage 90 CPU Cooler Reviews

Fri 2009-08-14 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
FrostyTech have reviewed two compact 3RSystem CPU coolers, the Iceage 80 Prima Mini and Iceage 90.

Here's what they had to say:

  • 3RSystem Iceage 80 Prima Mini Heatsink Review:

"The Iceage 80 Prima Mini was then tested with an 85W heat load which it is a little better suited for. Under these test condition the heatsink maintained an average 24.5°C rise over ambient temperature.

Compared to other heatsinks in the Intel socket 775 reference chart these results are satisfactory, but even compared against similarly compact heatsinks the Iceage 80 Prima Mini at best manages average performance results.

It's worthwhile to keep in mind that most heatsinks in this chart are equipped with 120mm fans. Nevertheless, given the compact size of the 3RSystem Iceage 80 Prima Mini heatsink, it's safe to say it only offers satisfactory performance when faced against 150W heat loads. Frostytech would suggest limiting its use to 85W TDP or less class processors where it is much better suited. The manufacturers claims of support for up to 200W seem excessively rosy if low temperatures are desired."

  • 3RSystem Iceage 90 Heatsink Review:

"Out of the top 25 sub-115mm tall heatsinks the 3Rsystem Iceage 90 comes in ~9.4°C behind the leading model (ranked by the 150W Thermal test). The Noctua NH-C12P is the best heatsink of the bunch, in terms of low temperature and noise output, closely followed by the Scythe Zipang.

Results like these paint a clear picture of what to expect from the compact 3Rsystem Iceage 90 heatsink. At 2200RPM and standing just 115mm tall, the little 92mm fan affords the 3Rsystem Iceage 90 pretty average performance characteristics on both Intel and AMD synthetic test platforms. A fan speed controller is included by the manufacturer, but it's perhaps best to avoid it. Don't mess around with the 3Rsystem Iceage 90's fan speed if you want acceptable thermal results."

These are both solid little CPU coolers from 3Rsystem, the innovative company that designed the very first heatsink that used the heatpipes as part of the base.
