Intel X25-M 'G2' TRIM-Enabled Firmware Released

Mon 2009-10-26 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
Today, Intel have released a new firmware which enables TRIM support on their X25-M 'G2' solid state drives under Windows 7. HotHardware and PC Perspective have tested and benchmarked this new firmware, so let's see what they think about it:
  • Hothardware: Intel 34nm X25-M Gen 2 SSD Performance Update:

"After being flashed to the new firmware update, which enables TRIM support and faster sequential write speeds, the Intel 34nm Gen 2 X25-M 160GB drive offered increased performance in every benchmark we ran. Read performance with the new firmware update installed was roughly on-par with the previous version, although the numbers slightly favor the update, by a few MB/s at least. Write performance, however, was increased by over 30% in some cases."

  • PC Perspective: Intel X25-M 'G2' TRIM Enabled Firmware and SSD Toolbox Reviewþ:

"Intel certainly impressed us with this new firmware release. Patching was easy and even worked on a laptop that had trouble with previous Intel firmware patch utilities. We would have liked to see the new 100 MB/sec limit applied to *all* G2 models, but we will take what we can get. The SSD Toolbox app was simple and did its job in an unobtrusive manner. Intel seems to have had the user experience in mind throughout this entire process.

After posting this I realized I have never issued my Editors Choice award to anything... ever! When a firmware update and some extra TRIM sauce can nearly double IOPS performance of an SSD that was already king in that area, it deserves a little something from yours truly: Editor's Choice Award."

Overall, it's great to see that Intel has carried out its promise to have a TRIM-enabled firmware available once Win7 was released. However, it's too bad that the 80GB model doesnt gain the faster write speeds that the 160GB model does.
