600W-950W Power Supply Review Roundup

Tue 2009-10-27 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
Are you building a new Mid-to-High-end computer? Need a new power supply? Well here is a great lineup of 600W to 950W power supplies from industry heavyweights like Corsair, Enermax, Nexus, Spire, Thermaltake, and Ultra.

Let's see what they had to say:

  • Bigbruin: Ultra Products X4 850W Modular Power Supply Review:

"While the unit did not survive the review, I won't hold that against it. As the new test setup gets refined the mortality rate will hopefully drop, while the useful information provided in these reviews will hopefully rise. Before its death, the unit put up respectable numbers in terms of regulation, ripple, efficiency, and not previously mentioned - noise output. If the fan was not facing me so I could see it spinning, I would have to go check on it!"

  • Driverheaven: Spire Blackmoon XP 600W PSU Review:

"The Spire Blackmoon XP 600W offers great acoustics performance in conjunction with high electrical efficiency, features mainly sought after by professionals who work with their computers a lot and HTPC users. It is an attractive modular unit which will please people who are concerned with the way their systems look. At the same time hardcore modders and enthusiasts probably don’t have a use for this product, as with its somewhat mundane 12V lines it should not be assigned to power heavily overclocked or multi-GPU systems."

  • Hardware Secrets: Corsair TX950W Power Supply Review:

"All voltages were within a tighter 3% margin while ATX specification allows a 5% margin, meaning that all voltages – including -12 V – were closer to their nominal values than necessary. The exception was when the unit was delivering 950 W, when +3.3 V and +5 V outputs got out of this tighter margin, but they were still inside the maximum allowed.

Noise and ripple were low all the times."

  • JonnyGURU: Thermaltake Toughpower XT 750W PSU Review:

"Thermaltake's decision to go back and improve on the Toughpower XT platform seems to have paid off here. This unit is significantly better performing than the last XT model I looked at, and the price has dropped to sane levels. I can't say for certain whether or not the 850W version has been markedly improved, but I can say that the Toughpower XT 750 watt model is now something more worthy of being called a flagship unit. I'd like to see Thermaltake drop the old PSH design and go with something a little more efficient soon, but as it stands right now this is an excellent unit."

  • Rbmods: Enermax ECO80+ 620W SLI PSU:

"This is the most silent PSU I have ever tested, the only thing I could hear was the sound of the air moving when I put my ear straight beside the fan itself. Not even under load did it raise RPM or make more noise, I am very happy with this silent feature. Enermax has put more effort into making this unit more silent with a high quality fan and twister bearing and this can really be noticed!"

  • Tweaknews: Corsair HX750W Professional Series Modular 750 Watt Power Supply Review:

"Corsair's new HX750W ATX modular power supply certainly doesn't disappoint. With excellent performance, quiet operation, and a very innovative feature set, this PSU could easily find a home in the most demanding systems. For those enthusiasts wanting more power, Corsair can also supply an 850- or 1000-Watt unit from their HX series. 750 too much? They also have HX units in 650-, 620-, 520- and 450- Watt ratings to satisfy every enthusiast's needs. The overall quality is excellent and the flat modular cables are well executed, giving the user a plethora of configuration options."

  • TechwareLabs: Nexus RX-6300 630 Watt Power Supply Review:

"Nexus has a sleek, solid, silent PSU in the RX-6300. While the short EPS12V cable will certainly be a concern to some, every other aspect of performance is stellar. If you’re looking to build a silent PC for a home theater, a file server, or any other situation where noise is a no-no, this power supply will not disappoint."

  • TechwareLabs: Ultra X4 850W Power Supply Review:

"The Ultra X4 Power Supply power voltages were within +- 1% of the desired voltage. This is rather good as the ATX Standards require the voltages to be within +- 5% of the desired voltage. We tested these voltages on startup, idle, load, shutdown. So overall the power supply had a very solid performance."
