500W-1250W Power Supply Review Roundup

Sat 2009-11-07 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
BCCHardware, Driverheaven, PureOverclock, and TestSeek have reviewed 500W to 1250W power supplies from Corsair, Enermax, Nesteq, Thermaltake, and Zalman.

Let's see what they had to say:

  • BCCHardware: Thermaltake EVO 650W PSU Review:

"After reviewing a 1200W PSU, I didn't expect much from this 650W unit from Thermaltake. I was about as wrong as I could get. The Thermaltake EVO_BLUE 650W brings a host of style to the table and does it without sacrificing performance or quality. It is super solid under all of our tests and exceeds our expectations in almost every way. It managed to provide over 650W of power continuously and even topped out over 800W and still managed great quality output.

If you have any dual-card configuration and want a solid PSU that will get the job done without breaking the bank, I don't think you can go wrong with the Thermaltake EVO_BLUE 650W PSU. As you may have noticed in the video on the previous page, it's a great match to the Thermaltake Element G."

  • Driverheaven: Corsair TX950W PSU Review:

"The overall performance of the TX950W is excellent. The electrical performance is astounding, making Corsair’s specifications look conservative instead of inflated. The thermal performance is quite good and the acoustics performance could really use some fine tuning. If Corsair incorporated slightly larger heatsinks or a more sophisticated cooling system, both thermal and acoustics performance could easily reach world-class levels."

  • Driverheaven: Nesteq ASM XZero 500W PSU Review:

"Giving the ASM Xzero 500W unit a rating based on its overall performance is rather difficult. It offers great electrical performance but it cannot sustain its awesome typical load efficiency across the entire load range. Above everything else, it is designed to tremendously favour acoustics over thermal performance.

It is one of the quietest but also one of the hottest running units we have ever tested anywhere close to its power range - It would easily appeal to a user seeking ultimate silence, but an overclocker who prefers a cool running product would be best to avoid it. Trying to sum up - we would say that the overall performance of the ASM Xzero 500W unit is above average, but not great. It is a specialist PSU for a relatively niche market."

  • PureOverclock: Enermax Galaxy EVO 1250W Power Supply review:

"The Enermax Galaxy EVO 1250W is a behemoth of a power supply in just about every conceivable manner of criteria: it's strong, durable, and attractive. It can handle anything you can throw at it and will provide rock solid stability and power for your precious system. The EVO doesn't come cheap, but in return you get one of the very best power supplies on the market. "

  • TestSeek: Zalman ZM500-RS PSU Review:

"Doubtless the Zalman ZM500-RS is a high quality power supply with many interesting characteristics. I love that it’s small which makes it perfect to put in a small HTPC case or any other smaller PC case. However, the wiring is rather short so if you are building a PC system in a full tower case you will probably not be able to use this PSU without any extension cables.

The performance is absolutely fantastic, it is in fact the most energy efficient PSU I have tested so far. The energy efficiency is of ever increasing importance and it’s nice to know that your system is using up the minimum amount of power, which will in the end mean minimal cost. The PSU is ultra quiet and the voltages are stable no matter what you throw at it."
