Gigabyte & MSI GeForce GTX 275 1792MB Reviews - Custom & Overclocked Models

Mon 2009-11-09 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
Driverheaven and TweakTown reviewed two factory overclocked GeForce GTX 275 1792MB graphics cards from Gigabyte and MSI.

Here's what they had to say:

  • Driverheaven: Gigabyte GTX 275 Super Overclock:

"As we stated in the introduction to this review there are really only two ways for manufacturers to approach GeForce sales in the current market. It has to be value or performance and Gigabyte aimed for the latter with their GTX 275 and their attempt has been very successful. The performance of their Super Overclock model is fantastic for a GTX 275 allowing us to play some of the latest games at 2560x1600 with anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering. It also performed very well when processing PhysX workloads and GPU computing tasks such as video encoding.

Build quality is also a highlight of the card with a 2oz copper PCB used in addition to high quality components such as Japanese solid capacitors and Samsung memory. If there is one small issue with the hardware it is the choice of outputs, we would have preferred a second DVI instead of the VGA but media enthusiasts will be very pleased to see the HDMI port."

  • TweakTown: GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 275 Super Overclock 1792MB Video Card:

"After what we saw from the GTX 260 Super Overclock, the bar had seriously been raised before checking out this GTX 275 which sits in the same series. The good news is that it manages to clear the bar with no dramas. The bad news is that the bar is set higher than ever before.

The bundle is a bit on the light side of things, but the Super Overclock Series is about one thing; Performance! Since that is what GIGABYTE are aiming for, they have to do it well and we're glad to say they did. Something that you have to remember as well is that the GTX 285 we compared the card against today comes pre-overclocked out of the box, giving GIGABYTE a tougher fight. But for the most part we're still able to see it come out on top."

  • TweakTown: MSI GeForce N275GTX Lightning Video Card:

"We're a fan of the Lightning series and this version of the card really gets rid of the issues we had with the first one where the advertised clocks could only be achieved with the MSI software being installed. There's also no AirForce Panel with this one which is good for two reasons; the device on a whole is a bit of a pain and secondly it helps keep the price down, a definite plus.

Performance on a whole is pretty good; we saw a consistent boost over the GTX 275 and with the Lightning Afterburner application included in the bundle you can do a bit more overclocking yourself if you feel like getting even more performance out of the card."

If the Radeon HD 5850's don't tickle your fancy, then these two custom cards are decent high-end alternatives.
