Network Attached Storage (NAS) Reviews - QNAP & Thecus

Tue 2009-11-10 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
TestFreaks, TweakTown, and Virtual-Hideout have reviewed a few 2- to 7-bay Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices.

Let's see what they had to say:

  • TestFreaks: Qnap TS-219P Turbo NAS Reviewed:

"The Qnap TS-219P is a powerful and extremely useful little NAS box, it won’t take up much space or make a lot of noise, but it will allow you to do things over your network that you’ve only dreamed of. It’s certainly much more than a backup device…

The interface is very nicely down and easy to navigate for even the most novice of user. Anyone can have the Qnap TS-219P up and running on their network in a matter of minutes really."

  • TweakTown: QNAP TS-419P Four-Bay Turbo NAS Server Review:

"When it really comes down to it, I think QNAP dropped the ball with the TS-419P. In a standalone review the TS-419P would have looked like an average performer with a lot of great features, but once the benchmark numbers were laid out it appears that QNAP needs to look for ways to optimize the programming to work with the new Marvel processor."

  • Virtual-Hideout: Thecus N7700 Ultimate NAS Server Review:

" Once again I will say I’m impressed with the N7700. The speeds alone are enough to make this a “must have”. There are features I don’t need, features I can’t use fully, and features I can’t test. Those features of course will be very handy, if not required by some users, so your mileage may vary. But for reliability, speed, ease of use and features, it’s incredibly hard to beat Thecus’s high end NAS units.

Thecus has very much changed the way I setup all the computers on my network. Instead of worrying about the capacity of every computer, having a RAID5 setup on each one, now all my machines are setup with only two drives (High performance OS/Programs and a Pagefile/working drive) with regular backups scheduled. I had already spent time converting my commonly used CD/DVD's into image files that I would mount over the network, having the N7700 mount them has removed the requirement for 3rd party software on all my machines."
