AMD Radeon HD 5850 & HD 5870 Graphics Card Reviews

Mon 2009-11-16 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
PureOverclock, Techgage, TestSeek, ThinkComputers, and TweakTown have reviewed a few Radeon HD 5850 and HD 5870 graphics cards from ASUS, HIS, and Sapphire.

Let's see what they had to say:

  • PureOverclock: ASUS Radeon EAH5870 Voltage Tweak Edition:

"The ASUS Radeon EAH5870 Voltage Tweak Edition is a very impressive graphics card, posting the best single-GPU results we've ever seen and bringing some outstanding features to the mix. Not everyone will feel the need to overclock a card like this, but for those that do, the ASUS EAH5870 card gives you the tools to do just that. If you're someone who believes Performance is King, then this card reigns as royalty and is one of the very best you'll find on the market."

  • Techgage: Sapphire Radeon HD 5870 Vapor-X:

"For those who want the best possible GPU for the money right now, the HD 5870 is hands-down the winner, and Sapphire only improves on the best with its Vapor-X, which proves itself to be well worth the $20 premium, and as a result, earned itself one of our Editor's Choice awards."

  • TestSeek: ASUS Radeon HD 5850 1GB GDDR5 graphics card:

"I must first praise AMD for the work they have done with this card. It is both energy efficient and a high performer, very impressive. Asus has taken AMDs reference design and added a lot of value to it with their smart technologies and software tools.

The main advantage with this Asus card is of course its overclocking abilities which are nothing short of fantastic.

ASUS EAH5850 is already on sale at a price that oscillates between the $270 and $300, which is very competitive given its performance, overclocking abilities and the fact that it includes DIRT 2."

  • ThinkComputers: Sapphire Radeon HD 5850 1GB Video Card Review:

"The Sapphire Radeon HD 5850, along with other reference HD 5850s, sells for $299.99 at my favorite online retailer. Though its price nearly takes it out of what I’d consider a midrange gaming card, it is still under $350, which is where upper-end cards usually start. Again, ATI’s midrange card has significantly raised the bar for performance in the $250-$300 price range. ThinkComputers.org gives the Sapphire Radeon HD 5850 1GB Video Card a 10 out of 10 score."

  • TweakTown: HIS Radeon HD 5850 1GB Video Cardž:

"We're not really seeing anything too different with the HIS version of the HD 5850, though. With that said, we really don't need to see anything new; out of the box the HD 5850 in its reference form is a great card and that's exactly what we've got on our hands today."

  • TweakTown: Sapphire Radeon HD 5870 1GB Vapor-X Video Card:

"With all that said and done, it's very hard to fault the HD 5870 Vapor-X OC from Sapphire. The simple fact is we've got better cooling numbers, less noise and more performance than the stock model. Sapphire has also helped add a second game to the package to make it stand out that little bit more.

If you're looking for a HD 5870 that stands out a bit more than the normal one, the Vapor-X version is one model worth looking at. If you want even more out of the box performance and you don't mind waiting a little longer, the inevitable ATOMIC version of the card might be what you're after."

If you can find any of these cards available in stock anywhere, buy it, you won't regret it.
