Kingston SSDNow V Series 40GB Boot Drive Reviews

Mon 2009-11-16 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
Benchmark Reviews and Bigbruin have reviewed the increasingly popular Kingston SSDNow V Series 40GB Boot Drive, an affordable solid state drive (SSD) that is actually a smaller, slightly crippled Intel X-25M.

Let's see what they had to say:

  • Benchmark Reviews:

"For what it is, and what it's meant to do, the Kingston SSDNow V 40GB 'Boot Drive' SSD is an amazing value. With only 40GB of storage capacity, this SSD will hold the Operating System and a large installation base of games and applications, but music and video should be stored elsewhere (which is a good idea anyway). The 180MBps read speed is dead-average for consumer SSDs at this time, but the 45MBps write speeds we received were the lowest ever reported. Putting capacity into perspective, it might not matter if the sustained write speeds were ever lower because it's not as if there will be many situations where it becomes a drawback. In conclusion, the Kingston SNV125-S2/40GB Boot Drive is an excellent 'first-SSD' upgrade. Desktop and notebook users alike can take advantage of Solid State Drive performance without the price tag that normally comes with it."

  • Bigbruin:

"At around $100, the price is definitely attractive, and I hope it is a sign of things to come (and to come soon) in the SSD market. For those that got in on the rebate, the price is very impressive, but even without it you are looking at about the best deal in SSDs to be seen so far.

The bottom line is that Kingston has put together a solid state drive that offers a mix of performance and pricing that has already gathered a good deal of attention. For everything it has to offer, the Kingston SSDNow V Series 40GB solid state drive earns the Bigbruin.com "Recommended" and "Good Value" awards."

With its 170MB/s sequential read and 40MB/s sequential write speeds, this is a specialized drive. It will boot your system quickly and give you superior system responsiveness, but writing a large amount of files to the drive will be slightly slower than with a modern HDD.

*Update*

PC Perspective just posted a review of this SSD too: "Kingston SSDNow V Series 40GB Desktop Bundle Review (with RAID!)".
