DDR3 Memory Kits - Crucial, Kingston, OCZ

Tue 2009-11-24 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
Futurelooks, techPowerUp, TechwareLabs, and TweakTown have reviewed 4GB to 6GB DDR3 memory kits from the likes of Crucial, Elixir, Kingston, and OCZ. The memory speeds range from DDR3-1333 6-6-6 to DDR3-2133 9-9-9.

Let's see what they had to say:

  • Futurelooks: Kingston HyperX 4GB 2133MHz DDR3 Dual Channel Memory Kit Review:

"There are folks who will opt to try pushing the HyperX 4GB 2133MHz DDR3 Dual Channel Memory upwards of 2300MHz using 10-10-10-30 timings. If you can hit this level, chances are the extra performance might be there to warrant the fanatical OC. But, my job here is to help educate users as to how to get the most out of your memory as well as optimal performance. That said, higher frequencies with slacker timings don’t always equate to better performance. Personally, I found the best performance at 2200MHz keeping the memory 9-9-9-27 timings.

Whether you’re a benchmark fiend or extreme performance user, the HyperX 2133MHz Dual Channel Memory is the way to go. At $229, this is some of the more expensive performance memory readily available, but it is the fastest we’ve tested to date."

  • techPowerUp: Elixir 6 GB 1600 MHz CL9 Tri-Channel:

"The Elixir memory brand should be well known to those who are in the OEM or ODM business. Shops that offer entire PCs generally go for this brand to power their PCs. That said, Elixir and Nanya for that matter are not well known for their overclocking memory. Instead, you will find the modules in office PCs and other budget to mid-range systems. The 1600 MHz kit with the cool golden heatspreaders does certainly look cool and it delivers everything it promises. You will get 1600 MHz with CL9-9-9-28 at 1.5V out of the box. Do not expect much more however. Our sample managed to push the envelope up to 1780 MHz before hitting a wall. Sure, there is memory out there with tighter latency and higher speed, but for those who just want memory that works and possibly looks good should feel right at home with the Elixir kit. So for those on a budget, wanting to slap some nice, heatspreader equipped memory into their rig, where money and speed are more important than tight timings or flashy overclocks should be quite happy with these. Overclockers and enthusiasts however, may want to look elsewhere."

  • TechwareLabs: Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR3-1333 RAM Review:

"Clearly, with results like these, this memory isn’t going to be setting any land-speed records. That said, if you’re like most of us, you don’t have $300+ to blow just on RAM. At time of publication, this 4GB kit goes for about $105 online. For that price, you get a solid performer with plenty of extra flash and dazzle. If you’re looking for good memory at a good price, with a little extra something, the Crucial Ballistix Tracer is definitely worth a look."

  • TweakTown: OCZ DDR3 PC3-15000 Platinum Series 4GB Memory Kit:

"If you want something that's a bit faster than the 1600MHz stuff, but don't want to pay the premium that 2000MHz kits carry, this is a fantastic 4GB kit for your P55 setup. Newegg are currently selling it for just $125.99 USD. It's a nice offering from OCZ for people who want to get a kit that is going to offer some decent MHz off the bat while not breaking the bank.

The fact that it doesn't have big fins protruding out the top or extremely tight timings means you're able to get a kit of memory that offers a reasonably high standard MHz at a reasonable price. The PC3-15000 ultimately represents a good medium where you don't pay that 2000MHz+ premium, but you have some more speed to play with unlike 1333MHz or 1600MHz DDR kits."
