OCZ Colossus 3.5-in Solid State Drive Review
PC Perspective have reviewed an early sample of the OCZ Colossus, a 3.5-in solid state drive that will be available in 128GB to 1TB sizes.
Let's see what they had to say:
"OCZ has brought a worthy contender with their first 3.5" SSD solution. The added space of their enclosure was well utilized by a plethora of flash chips and no less than 4 SSD controllers. While this parallelism helped the Colossus scream past the competition in write speeds, the internal RAID processors' lack of NCQ and TRIM support hobbled its true potential. All things considered, the Colossus remains a solid solution for those wanting SSD performance in a 3.5" form factor. "
To be honest, at the moment, I'm not too impressed with the Colossus. Sure, it has insane write speeds and it will be available in unprecedented sizes, but in nearly every real-life scenario it gets outperformed by the Intel X-25M G2, sometimes massively so. Furthermore, it doesn't support TRIM, it doesn't support AHCI/NCQ, and the firmware is not user upgradable. Hopefully, OCZ rectifies some of these shortcomings before this product is officially released.
