400W-1200W Power Supply Review Roundup

Fri 2009-11-27 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
DriverHeaven, Hardware Secrets, JonnyGURU, and PureOverclock have reviewed various 400W to 1200W power supplies from ABS, Corsair, Nexus, SilverStone, Thermaltake, and Ultra.

Let's see what they had to say:

  • DriverHeaven: Corsair HX650W Power Supply Review:

"Overall the Corsair HX650W is an excellent and highly competitive product. It combines superb overall performance, good aesthetics and first-rate reliability for demanding users who prefer to pay a little extra to demand the best on the market. The black flat cables will also draw the attention of many modders as they look much better than regular cables and are quite difficult to find nowadays. The very long 7 year warranty adds to the value of the HX650W, although this unit is built like a tank and it would be next to impossible to cause it any damage during normal use."

  • Hardware Secrets: Nexus RX-8500 850 W Power Supply Review:

"We were a little bit disappointed with Nexus RX-8500. Since it is part of the same series as RX-6300 we expected it to achieve a higher efficiency. RX-6300 uses a partial synchronous (i.e. instead of using rectifiers on the +12 V output it uses MOSFET transistors) and this explains the better performance from this 630 W model.

But that doesn’t mean that RX-8500 is a bad product, on the contrary: it can really deliver 850 W at high temperatures, has voltages closer to their nominal values than required (3% tolerance while ATX specs allow up to 5%), presents low noise and ripple levels and is equipped with a low-noise fan. It also supports three-way SLI, but the cables for installing the third video card must be bought separately."

  • Hardware Secrets: SilverStone Nightjar 400 W Power Supply Review:

"SilverStone Nightjar 400 W is a superb power supply, using a high-end design, based on a LLC resonant primary and DC-DC converters on the secondary. This allowed to this power supply to deliver up an impressive 617 W during our tests (due to its highly overspec’ed components), present very high efficiency between 85% and 87% (when pulling up to 400 W), voltages very close to their nominal values (below 3% of their nominal value), low noise and ripple and all protections working fine, protecting your equipment."

  • Hardware Secrets: Ultra X4 500 W Power Supply Review:

"Ultra X4 500 W is a very good 500 W power supply, being able to really deliver 500 W at very high temperatures, efficiency between 82% and 86%, voltages very close to their nominal values and very little noise and ripple. The full modular cabling system is a very nice feature and it comes with the correct number of cables for a 500 W product.

The only negative thing we could say about Ultra X4 500 W is its price: costing USD 100 it is one of the most expensive 500 W power supplies around."

  • JonnyGURU: Thermaltake Toughpower XT 850W - A Second Look:

"Two weeks ago, Thermaltake came in and showed us what a good 750 watt power supply looked like. Based on their revised Toughpower XT platform, that unit did so well it earned a recommendation here. The same cannot be said for the updated 850 watt XT model. Yes, the ripple and noise suppression has been markedly improved, but the price is still high and the low-ish 12V capacity offers very little reason to buy this unit over its own 750W little brother. Nice try, Thermaltake, but the 850W market is much harder to crack than the 750W market is. The old CWT PSH platform just can't cut it, especially at the price you're asking for this one."

  • JonnyGURU: Ultra X4 1200W Power Supply Review:

"The X4 series is Ultra's attempt to freshen up the X3 line by adding 80 Plus certification among other things to the aging X3 lineup. While this unit's performance is in no way indicative of the rest of the product line, and the big 1600W monster is likely still pushing its own special platform that has proven to be absolutely awesome at other sites, I have to say I am disappointed by this unit. It is a good thing the 1200W model is not the flagship of Ultra's fleet, because this one's barely holding itself above water."

  • PureOverclock: ABS Dark Beret 1000W Power Supply Review:

"The ABS Dark Beret 1000W is a power supply that delivers solid features and good performance when heavily loaded with a case full of power-hungry components. From a feature standpoint, the accessories included in this package are well done, there is a great assortment of sleeved modular cables that support triple SLI/CrossFire setups, and an easy-to-use and colour-coded modular connection design is employed.

From a functional standpoint, the Dark Beret 1000W boasts good voltage regulation, an 80 PLUS Bronze efficiency rating, and a quiet operation. The only detractions here are that the cable lengths could be slightly longer (particularly for the PCIe cables) and when heavily loaded the 12V rail measurements dropped a bit more than we'd prefer to see from a kilowatt unit."
