40GB-256GB Solid State Drive Review Roundup

Fri 2009-11-27 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
PureOverclock, ThinkComputers, and TweakTown have reviewed 40GB to 256GB solid state drives from Crucial, G.Skill, Kingston, and OCZ.

Here's what they had to say:

  • PureOverclock: Kingston SSDNow V Series 40GB Boot Drive Review:

"At only $110 USD after rebate, the Kingston SSDNow V-Series 40GB drive packs a punch and looks to bring SSD technology to the masses. And I can assure you, after using SSDs in a system, you will think a Velociraptor is painfully slow by comparison; the difference is that pronounced. With virtually every top-performing SSD on the market sitting painfully expensive, this Kingston drive is a very tempting purchase, and at that price you really can't go wrong as long as you understand its specific limitations. That being said, the bottom line is the Kingston SSDNow V Series 40GB is the perfect boot drive to boost your system's performance by leaps and bounds."

  • ThinkComputers: Crucial M225 256GB Solid State Drive Review:

"The M225 drive proves once again that the Indilinx Barefoot controller is currently the best option out there right now when designing a solid state drive. Crucial has done a great job with this drive. The all aluminum casing provides protection and also makes the drive look “cool”. The performance of the drive is pretty much spot on with other drives based on the same hardware. You are definitely going to see a performance increase over JMicron-based solid state drives and a HUGE difference compared to a normal SATA drive."

  • TweakTown: G.Skill Falcon II 64GB 2.5-inch Solid State Disk Review:

"G.Skill managed to be the first out of the gate with Indilinx’s latest controller and it should be another success in their growing solid state line-up. The new ECO controller should allow G.Skill to manufacture the Falcon II for less and pass the cost saving on to the consumer. Already we are seeing a 30 CAD cost reduction when compared to the Falcon with 64GB of NAND Flash. When we compared the 128GB Falcon to the 128GB Falcon II we found a 50 CAD price difference, so it looks like the G.Skill was able to make significant strides on a series of drives that were already some of the lowest priced to begin with."

  • TweakTown: OCZ Technology Agility 120GB 2.5-inch Solid State Drive Review:

"The only thing that really hurts the Agility is the fact that the 120GB OCZ Summit costs around 30 Dollars less. The Summit is listed as being part of OCZ’s Performance Series of products, but uses the Samsung controller. We have looked at several Samsung controlled drives and to date they have all performed right around the same, but given that OCZ has managed to squeeze just a little more out of all their SSDs we can’t very well claim that if you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all.

So, where does that leave us; the Summit or the Agility? - The jury is still out but from past experience I would go with the Summit for RAID due to Samsungs hardware garbage collection and the Agility for single drive use."

There really isn't a bad SSD in this group, so just pick the one that best suits your needs.
