4GB DDR3 Memory Kits - Corsair, OCZ, Patriot

Mon 2009-11-30 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
Benchmark Reviews, PureOverclock, and ThinkComputers have reviewed three 4GB DDR3 memory kits from Corsair, OCZ, and Patriot.

Let's see what they had to say:

  • Benchmark Reviews: Patriot Viper-II DDR3-2000 Lynnfield Memory Kit:

"The Viper II Sector 5 DDR3 kit from Patriot was designed to meet the unique requirements of Intel's Lynnfield Desktop Platform. The 1.65v limit established by Intel often poses a challenge to memory manufacturers and vendors, but by selecting only the highest-binned chips, Patriot was able to deliver a kit rated at 2000MHz and 8-8-8-24 timings. In our benchmarks, that extra bandwidth translated to improved performance in just about every test. In the real world, performance gains aren't likely to be dramatic, but a high performance memory kit like this can help get the most out of Lynnfield."

  • PureOverclock: OCZ Black Edition 4GB DDR3-1600:

"OCZ has done a fine job with these modules, showcasing sharp aesthetics, quality construction, and great performance. If you're looking for some very sleek modules and have supporting hardware to take advantage of the features here, these OCZ Black Edition DDR3-1600 modules are a great option."

  • ThinkComputers: Corsair Dominator DDR3-1600 i7/i5 Optimized 4GB Dual Channel Memory Kit Review:

"The memory looks great, as all Dominator memory does. The heatspreaders and fins keep both the chips and PCB cool. Intel XMP makes setup a breeze, just pop the memory in and you’re at DDR3-1600 8-8-8-24 at 1.65v without even looking at the BIOS.

The memory overclocked easily, giving me a max overclock of DDR3-2008 10-9-9-24. Testing showed significant gains from the overclocks.

The biggest bonus of the memory is the price, it sells for $120 at my favorite online retailer. That kind of performance at such a low price is definitely a value. ThinkComputers.org gives the Corsair Dominator DDR3-1600 i7/i5 Dual Channel Kit a 10 out of 10 score."

Patriot's Viper II Sector 5's are some of the very best DDR3 memory kits at the moment, with many featuring the unparalleled Elpida Hyper chips.
