ASUS TS Mini Home Server Review

Tue 2010-03-16 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
Tweaknews have posted a review of the interesting ASUS TS Mini Home Server, which sports an Intel Atom N280 1.66Ghz processor, 1GB/2GB of DDR2-800 RAM, 500GB/1TB/2TB 7200RPM HDD, and a wide assortment of connectivity options.

Here's an excerpt:

"I have to admit, I was skeptical going into a home server review. I figured somewhere along the way I would find a glitch or some kind of incompatibility with my network setup. However, I was pleasantly surprised when I had a stable, quiet server up and running in about an hour, with a full backup of my rig scheduled to run that night. I encountered no errors or other difficulties along the way. This is exactly what the home user needs – a reliable, easy to configure home server that easily backs up important files and provides centralized storage to serve up files to every computer in the house. Just like a popular infomercial once stated, you can set it and forget it."

The cheapest version of this product costs $329, the most expensive $499. These are decent prices, but frankly you can buy the ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005HA netbook with an identical processor, 1GB of RAM, and 250GB for about $350. To me that's a better value since the fully-fledged netbook is way more versatile. You don't get the sleek server software package, but you can find many open source alternatives.
