PowerColor & Sapphire Radeon HD 5830 Graphics Card Reviews

Wed 2010-03-17 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
PureOverclock have reviewed two Radeon HD 5830 graphics cards from PowerColor and Sapphire.

Here's what they had to say:

  • PureOverclock: PowerColor Radeon PCS+ 5830 1GB:

"PowerColor has silghtly overclocked the PCS+ 5830, giving a minor performance increase over the reference card. More interesting, however, is that the PCS+ 5830 has great overclocking headroom of approximately 14% on average. This is not insignificant, and should help those games where it struggled, especially when antialiasing was turned up. Another noteworthy positive here is the heatpipes and cooler perform admirably, keeping the PCS+ 5830 comfortably cool under load.

The big fly in the ointment here, however, is the price. The PowerColor PCS+ 5830 1GB costs $240 USD, approximately 47% more expensive than the PCS+ 5770 which sits $70 cheaper. Yet the performance difference between the two cards is about 15-20%; that is a tough pill to swallow, so we're a bit perplexed by ATI's pricing scheme here."

  • PureOverclock: Sapphire Radeon HD5830 1GB:

"The Sapphire Radeon 5830 1GB costs about $260 USD, approximately 50% more expensive than the Radeon 5770, but the performance is only about 15-20% better. We understand the diminishing returns are expected the higher you go in the performance ranges, but that's a bit too much. At that price, going with a second 5770 without much of a price premium is a tempting proposition. This Sapphire card also costs about $20 more than the competition, but you do get a hot game here worth about $50 so the tradeoff benefit depends on your perspective and what you value more."

As I mentioned when this GPU was first launched, it is simply too expensive when compared to the HD 5770. Hopefully, AMD wakes up and drops the price to $210-220, where it should have been all along.
