750W-1000W Power Supply Review Roundup

Wed 2010-03-17 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
Futurelooks, Hardware Secrets, PureOverclock, and ThinkComputers have reviewed 750W to 1000W power supplies from Antec, Cooler Master, OCZ, and Seasonic.

Let's see what they had to say:

  • Futurelooks: Cooler Master GX Series 750 Watt ATX Power Supply Review:

"The Coolermaster GX Series 750W Power Supply is everything you want in a budget unit. Sure, you’re not going to get the modular cabling. But then again, those tend to cost another $30 or more and you can always use velcro ties. At a current cost of $110, it gives the money conscious consumer a better choice in a “mainstream” power supply and with a 5 year warranty, one heckuva value."

  • Hardware Secrets: OCZ Z Series 850 W Power Supply Review:

"If you are looking for an exceptional 850 W power supply, OCZ Z Series 850 W is definitely a terrific choice, especially now that OCZ dropped its price to USD 200 (USD 170 with a mail-in rebate and free shipping at Newegg.com). It competes directly with Corsair HX850W, which costs USD 190 and has comparable performance. You see, Ecos Consulting, the company behind 80 Plus, gave HX850W their Gold certification, but Corsair decided to downgrade this unit to Silver because it couldn’t deliver 87% efficiency at full load at real-world temperatures."

  • Hardware Secrets: OCZ Z Series 1000 W Power Supply Review:

"Right now OCZ has the advantage of being the only manufacturer with high-wattage 80 Plus Gold-certified power supplies on the market. If you have a lot of money and are looking for a high-end 1,000 W power supply, Z Series 1000 W may be an option. This is definitely not a product for users with tight budgets, though.

Internally we discovered that Z Series 1000 W is based on the same project as the 850 W version but with one additional active PFC transistor and upgraded rectifying bridges."

  • PureOverclock: Seasonic X Series 750W Power Supply Review:

"From a functional standpoint, the X Series 750W boasts excellent voltage regulation, very good efficiency, and a quiet operation. We didn't experience any dropoff in the +12V rail when the 750W was overloaded. Considering what is offered here, the price tag of approximately $200 USD is a bit easier to accept, since you do get a top product for the investment, especially since the price premium isn't very much over far less capable competitors.

The Seasonic X Series 750W is an excellent power supply to satisfy performance needs; it has sleek aesthetics, excellent performance and quality, and Seasonic has set the bar very high with the X Series, getting our top recommendation."

  • ThinkComputers: Antec CP-850 850W Power Supply Review:

"When it comes to power supplies it’s all about performance and how the stable the rails are. As you can see from the test the CP-850 is definitely more stable than the Truepower 1000W. Reading other reviews of the CP-850 it looks like it outperforms many high-end power supplies out there, which is very impressive. It looks like this new CPX form factor and dual PCB layout really give you the performance you need. Also this being an Antec product you know it is quality-made and in having installing the power supply it was very study and seemed well put together."
