MSI GeForce GTX 460 Cyclone 768MB & 1GB Reviews

Fri 2010-07-30 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
Hardware Canucks and PureOverclock have reviewed the new MSI GeForce GTX 460 Cyclone 768MB & 1GB graphics cards, which features custom coolers and factory overclocked specifications.

Let's see what they had to say:

  • Hardware Canucks: MSI GeForce GTX 460 Cyclone 768MB Graphics Card:

"There really isn’t much to say about the MSI GTX 460 Cyclone that hasn’t already been said about these new GF104 cards. It embodies all of the qualities we have come to expect from the GTX 460 (performance, excellent pricing, relative efficiency and more) and adds a healthy clock speed increases as well a custom heatsink. To say this card merely succeeds in its goals is a massive understatement.

The real star of this show is of course the Cyclone heatsink; while the reference cooler is good, this one MSI installed is simply awe-inspiring. Granted, it exhausts all of the core’s heat into the general vicinity around the card but as long as you have sufficient airflow within your case, this should be of no concern. Performance was also quite good with the increased core speed bumping framerates to somewhere between the stock and higher clocked cards."

  • PureOverclock: MSI GTX 460 Cyclone 1024MB Graphics Card:

"While the reference card comes with a price tag of $229 price, the MSI Cyclone version costs about only $5 more, which is an outstanding deal in our opinion. It not only comes with a factory overclock and a custom heatsink that keeps temperatures impressively cool, but also some quality construction and amazing overclocking potential. Nvidia has really taken on the Radeon 5830 and come out on top in almost every instance. And that's not even taking into account that the CUDA and PhysX capabilities of the GeForce cards that are blatantly lacking in the ATI camp.

So what's the catch? Well, thankfully there really isn't one here. With the launch of two cards, this particular one has 1GB of memory, rather than the 768MB, so it's slightly less challenged when running high resolutions with the antialiasing cranked up. Overall, the 1GB card beats the 768MB by about 5% on average. And with the impressive overclocking capabilities of this card, you can push things even further very easily."

These are two great mainstream graphics cards, but then again, most GeForce GTX 460 models are solid products.
