AMD A8-3870K Unlocked Llano APU Review

Thu 2012-02-02 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
Hardware Canucks have reviewed the brand new AMD A8-3870K Llano APU (Accelerated Processing Unit). This 32nm 3.0Ghz quad-core chip is based on the new FM1 socket, supports DDR3-1866 memory speeds, and features an integrated Radeon HD 6550D GPU with 400 shaders. What's really unique about this particular model is that it features fully unlocked multipliers for both the CPU and GPU portions, and the $145 price tag is quite attractive as well.

Let's see what they had to say:

"If you're building a low cost system from scratch that will be used for medium-level gaming, HD movie watching or other general day-to-day tasks, the Lynx platform is a no-brainer that provides unmatched value. Intel's lower-end Sandy Bridge models are still generally faster in most benchmarks, but when you take an overall look it is hard not to come to the conclusion that Llano's graphics capabilities more than makes up for its processing shortcomings. Furthermore, with this new unlocked A8-3870K chip it is very easy to address some of the performance shortcomings via overclocking, and based on our experience you are getting a terrifically versatile all-in-one chip for $145."

This is a great little chip for the money, a perfect choice for a budget system that may be used for some light-to-medium gaming duties.
